Redirect

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to know, how can I create a redirect page to other site/page?

    thank you

Essentially any page or post with a link in it can do this. Images as well as text can be links to any URL.
    Relevant support pages include:

I’m sorry. Think I probably misunderstood. I guess you mean automatic redirection of one URL to another URL. I don’t have any knowledge about that, but I believe it is possible. I’m using a Firefox add-on that redirects one version of a post to another version.

hmmmm – i came here looking for some answers on this topic also – i saw one thing once on the domains page and have not been able to get back to it sense – I remember it used the words “if you are not planing on blogging with us anymore and would like your domain forwarded to your site it is only $$ (don’t remember the amount been looking for it sense) yet i would too like to know how to do this – thanks much

    @ plotterpaper,

if you are not planing on blogging with us anymore and would like your domain forwarded to your site it is only $$…

Maybe you refer to the following, from the Site Redirect support page:

Are you leaving WordPress.com? Would you like to redirect example.wordpress.com (as well as all of your permalinks) to your new domain name? Have you recently changed your blog address and need to redirect traffic to the new name?

I had considered referring the OP to this page, but decided against it, thinking that they wanted something more universally applicable. Perhaps I was wrong.

    Hi @esqizofrenia,

Could you provide an example of a page or post on your site and where you would like to redirect it to? If I understand correctly, I don’t believe it’s possible to redirect just a single URL, but I’d like to see an example first!

I have a similar problem. A program that I help to run (https://poeticsandtheory.wordpress.com/) is holding a conference; I want to set up a site for the conference using a different theme, i.e., not the one that I’m using for poeticsandtheory.wordpress.com, so I’ll have to set up a new domain. But I would also like to be able to publicize a URL consistent with the program’s: for instance, poeticsandtheory.wordpress.com/conference. So, I would need that page to redirect automatically to the new domain. Is that possible?

    Hi there,

You couldn’t really direct a URL from poeticsandtheory.wordpress.com/conference, however you could set up a Custom Menu in which one of the items is “Conference” which linked directly to that different WordPress.com site.

Alternatively, if you ever wanted to set up a custom domain for poeticsandtheory.wordpress.com (such as poeticsandtheory.com) then you could set up a subdomain for your conference site. So that that would become conference.poeticsandtheory.com. It would require a couple of purchases, but it would be an option.

Many thanks for your help, @amightywp.

I’d just like some further clarification on two points, if you wouldn’t mind:

    1. Supposing I were to purchase the poeticsandtheory.com domain and set up a subdomain, as you suggest, would I be able to use a different theme for each?

    2. Would the subdomain be a separate purchase? (And, if so, at the standard rate for a regular domain?)

    Thanks again!

You would indeed be able to use a different theme for each as they would be completely different WordPress.com sites. So it’s pretty important that I point out that you would need to go through the effort of setting up any content, etc!

As for cost, yes there would be an additional fee for the second subdomain, but it would be a bit less. A domain is $18 US which is what you would need for poeticsandtheory.com, however you would only need mapping for conference.poeticsandtheory.com, which runs $13 US.

Also, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was out over my weekend and so didn’t see your response! :(

    Thanks a ton, @amightywp! That’s very helpful.
