Redirect

    Hi,

After moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org, I have activated site redirect, from beatravelling.wordpress.com to beatravelling.com. The stats have also been moved. Today I discovered that there are still views being registered at the old website/admin. Why is that? Also the views being registered at the old website is not the same as the stats in my new admin.

  • I am not very sure about this, but here is my guess. When you say you have moved from WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org), as per this guide https://move.wordpress.com/move-subscribers/, the stats will be moved too if you continue to use Jetpack on your new self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site.

As for views being logged on your old WordPress.com site, it’s likely that users are still visiting your WordPress.com site like (user-site-link.WordPress.com) and that’s the key reason why stats are being logged at WordPress.com stats section.

When you say stats are not the same, it’s likely that they’re not the same because there are multiple audience who visit your new self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) using a redirection from your old WordPress.com site and some who visit your new self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site directly.

I hope this helps clear the confusion. Feel free to get back if you have questions and I will be keen on helping you through it!

  • Hi there,

I had a look at your referrer stats, and those views are coming from the Reader. The feed for the WordPress.com site still exists in the Reader, so people can still find your posts there via Search, Tag Search, and recommended posts, even if you’ve moved all your followers to the new site.

As they are viewing the posts in the Reader itself, and not directly on your site, there’s nothing to trigger the redirect.

If you set the WordPress.com site to private that should also prevent the posts from being readable any more in the Reader, but I’d advise against that – the Reader won’t list all posts for your new site, as it’s feed will only go back ten posts at most from the day the first person added that site to their followed sites in the Reader. But having your old posts still discoverable in the Reader can still help drive traffic to your site, as the moment they click the Visit Site link in the Reader, they’ll be redirected to the new site.
