Redirect Blog – confused…
-
Hi,
I transferred my blog (annasrecipebox.wordpress.com) to a self-hosting solution. I’ve also read the guide on redirecting, but it looks like there’s a fee ($9.97). Is that right?
Also, the following statement really confused me:
“The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com”. How can this be if I’m hosting the blog off WordPress.com?All I want to do is that when people come to my (old) blog, give them 30 seconds to read the message I have there, and then automatically take them to the self-hosted blog.
How can I do that?
Thanks in advance for your help. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, it costs, and here are the instructions. I haven’t done this, but it appears simple.

Hm… Yes, I read those instructions. And they only appear simple. ;)
Is there a way to do that for free?
Thanks for your help.

I don’t know if you can put a plain html redirect in as code on a page or the last post or not – never tried that –
BUT – when I had a blog that had class schedule information posted on it that is now posted in a coherent way on a new site I just put a note on the opening post that says “information has moved to here” and then there is a link below that a visitor can click on to see the correct information – the letters are a bit large –
not elegant but worked well enough for me. Not a clue what it did to search engines but that was not an issue because of the way the old site was being used.

No. There is no there is no way to do this free of charge. The only way to do this is to purchase the upgrade just as raincoaster told you in her reply above.

“The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com”. How can this be if I’m hosting the blog off WordPress.com?That refers to domain mapping, where one uses their WordPress.com blog on one’s own domain. You are asking about how to redirect someone who lands on your COM blog to your self-hosted blog. This means that if your COM posts appear in search engines, when someone clicks on the COM link, WordPress.com will redirect it to the same post on your new self-hosted blog. This still requires the domain-mapping upgrade in order to perform the redirect and must be renewed annually.(Though with redirects now being permanent rather than temporary, I’m not sure about that. A permanent redirect tells search engines that your content has permanently moved to the new location.)
The other option as auxclass noted was to remove your content from your COM blog but for one last post with a link to your new self-hosted blog. No doubt about it that your blog will take a hit in search engine rankings as a result, but eventually search engines will find your new address.

/nod to Jennifer
With the redirects now permanent (301) one year of domain mapping with the redirect trick really should do it for you. I don’t see any need to continue it for a second year.
As far as the TOS and such, as Jennifer indicates, once your blog is located on a different hosting service, the .COM restrictions and TOS no longer apply to you.
