Having looked at the help instructions I don’t think it was as clear as it should be. I have posted a suggestion to WordPress that the delete site help page and the dropdown in the “Delete Site: What is your goal?” page you get when trying to delete a site should both mention redirecting traffic and advise users on how they can do this instead of deleting the site.
Not much help to you I know, but it could prevent other people from doing the same thing

now the google search etc finds the rcjt.wordpress site and presume will continue to as the site name stays even when the site is deleted ?

Search engines will catch up eventually, but they could show your deleted site for a month!

to take advantage of the long history of searches related to the rcjt.wordpress page is it possible for me to open a new website at that address which is just 1 page with the whole purpose of redirecting searches to the new site ?
