Redirect Domain to a Page
-
Hi,
I would like to ask if I can redirect my domain(homeandgardennj.com) from WordPress.com to GoDaddy domain page(homeandgardenguides.com/page-slug).
Any specific plan for this functionality?Thank you.
-
Hi,
The domain homeandgardennj.com appears to be registered with GoDaddy. So, in order to point it somewhere specific, you will need to access your GoDaddy account and make the changes. Or you will need to contact their support team.

Hi,
I am so sorry for the confusion. I got a domain (homeandgardenguides.com) bought from WordPress.com and a Godaddy domain(homeandgardennj.com). I would like to redirect my homeandgardenguides.com to homeandgardennj.com/page-slug.
-
Got it. Our redirect is designed to take yourdomain.com/yourlinks and send it to yournewdomain.com/yourlinks, but if you’re just looking to redirect everything to a single directory that may not work as well.
Since this is using GoDaddy services, I’d ask GoDaddy for help mapping the domain to that directory on their end.
Here’s how to change the name servers:
You may also want to transfer the domain to them if you’ll use that long term:
https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/Hoping that helps!

Hi, Thank you for your reply.
I already updated my NS but still I am redirected to (https://homeandgardennj.wordpress.com/) when accessing homeandgardenguides.com
Wordpress.com domain(homeandgardenguides.com) should be forwarding to homeandgardennj.com/the-target.html(GoDaddy domain).
-
Hi there,
To clarify, when you change your name server settings, they do not take effect right away, but there is a wait of several hours until you see the change.
When I check on my end I now see your GoDaddy site when I visit. You can see what I see at this link: https://d.pr/i/51ry63
Hope this helps!

Hi,
I already updated my NS in homeandgardenguides.com but still I am redirected to (https://homeandgardennj.wordpress.com/) instead of going to (homeandgardennj.com/the-target.html) GoDaddy domain.
I guess the domain propagation is complete.
Any advise on this?

Hi again,
I already updated my NS in homeandgardenguides.com but still I am redirected to (https://homeandgardennj.wordpress.com/) instead of going to (homeandgardennj.com/the-target.html) GoDaddy domain.
Did you happen to try to use an A record (IP address: 45.79.155.96) to direct traffic to GoDaddy initially, then switch to using GoDaddy name servers?
In our domain logs I see that the name server settings and A records for homeandgardenguides.com were changed several times in the last few days.
Most recently on 12/8 I see that this was removed
A Record pointing to 45.79.155.96And this was added
Nameservers pointing to ns01.domaincontrol.com and ns02.domaincontrol.comThat change seems to have been made after my last reply, when I noticed (and took a screenshot of) the site loading on GoDaddy. I can now confirm that I do not see the GoDaddy website at this time, as the domain settings are different than they were the last time I tried to visit.
I guess the domain propagation is complete.
I should clarify that when you change your domain settings it can be some time before the new settings take effect. Normally this process (called domain propegation) is resolved within 24 hours but it can take as long as 72 hours in some instances.
Because your change was quite recent(12/8) the site may not load, even though the settings are correct. I can confirm that your name server settings here are correct and what I would expect for a domain pointing to GoDaddy: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/homeandgardenguides.com/name-servers/homeandgardennj.wordpress.com
You may need to wait a little while longer until the propagation of the new settings is complete before you see the GoDaddy site load on your end, and the time it takes for this is beyond our control. Please let us know after 24 hours if you are still not seeing the site, so we can take a closer look.

Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your reply.
I’ve disabled “Use WordPress.com Name Servers” then added GoDaddy’s NS.
https://prnt.sc/vzcw5oBut when I disable it, I cannot add A record anymore pointing to 45.79.155.96.
Any suggestions?

Hi again,
To clarify, you do not actually need both settings. Setting either the IP address or the Name Server is sufficient. Name servers are the preferred way to direct traffic to your new host (it’s a more stable method than using IP addresses) and also name server settings superceed or take priority over other domain settings.
Because of this, when you set your domain to GoDaddy’s name servers, we remove the option to access other domain settings as they no longer have a say in the matter. I can confirm that your nameserver settings appear to be correct, and for me at least, I can see your GoDaddy site as expected.
Fresh screenshot here: https://d.pr/i/oxoAdv
If you do not see this now, you will see it soon. Domain propagation is a global process, so it may be working in my part of the world (Hawaii) but may still be pending in the location you get your internet connection from. But all signs point to your being able to see it soon.
Hope this helps!

Thank you Jerry for the confirmation.
One more thing, is it possible to redirect on a GoDaddy site webpage on the current NS setup?
If not, any recommendation?
-
Generally speaking, the name servers you added are ones that many accounts on GoDaddy share. They all use the same nameservers that you do, and once the domain traffic hits their service, they handle the routing (to your account) from there.
There is not a specific way to point your domain to a specific web page using name servers, but you may be able to confirm with GoDaddy wether this is possible on their end once the domain traffic redirects to their service.
If not, the next step would be to transfer the domain itself to GoDaddy, so they fully control it within their system, which may open up more options than they have for outside domains you are connecting via name server records.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction!

Hi Jerry,
I am not sure why I still cannot view the site. It’s already 72 hours since I updated the DNS.
Any advise?
-
From what I can see it’s all set correctly, but still directing to a server that doesn’t exist.
Since you want to exclusively use the domain on a GoDaddy site, have you considered transferring it to GoDaddy? https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/
That might be the only way around this.

Hi,
Since the domain from WordPress.com doesn’t redirect to the correct server. Is there any other way we can minimize this process?
https://prnt.sc/w2pq1s -
Hi again,
On our end, everything looks good. I see you added the GoDaddy nameserver addresses on Dec 9 according to our logs, and have made no changes since, so clearly they have had time to become stable.
I see the following GoDaddy name servers on our end when I check:
– ns01.domaincontrol.com
– ns02.domaincontrol.comYou can also confirm here in your domain control panel
And I also see the GoDaddy name server settings in this 3rd party tool we sometimes use to verify settings: https://gwhois.org/homeandgardenguides.com+dns
Because we point hundreds of domains to GoDaddy on a daily basis, I can confirm that this is all that is needed to see the domain redirected to them. Is it possible that you (in the past) set up some kind of redirection on GoDaddy’s side, to redirect traffic to WordPress.com?
Sometimes they will offer to set up a redirect or “domain masking” on their end, and it can cause some odd behavior like this. We don’t have another solution we can try on our end, so please reach out to GoDaddy support, and let them know you have set your “nameservers” here and ask them to confirm there is not a redirection or some other account setting on that end that is preventing the traffic from connecting.
If they spot something that needs to be changed on this end, please let us know and we’re happy to look into it. For now, everything on this end looks correct.
Thanks for your patience!

Hi Thank you for your response.
Please see GoDaddy’s support response below.
” Remove Godaddy nameservers for the homeandgardenguides.com domain.
Then point it back to WordPress.com.
Once the nameservers resolve to their servers, inform them that you want to set up a redirect from homeandgardenguides.com to homeandgardennj.com/digital-magazine/, so that they can guide you on how to set it up via .htaccess or CNAME record.
To be clear, you don’t have to use Godaddy nameservers since you don’t have the hosting and domain registered with us.
”Appreciate your feedback on this. Thanks.
Regards,

Hmmm…
I should clarify that we do not have the ability to point your domain to a sub-directory like
/digital-magazinevia domain settings, so the we would only be able to point your traffic to the root domain ofhomeandgardennj.comdirectly.When you change the nameserver settings here, or add an A record, that is essentially what you are doing, pointing traffic to
homeandgardennj.comand nothomeandgardennj.com/digital-magazine/We use a different method for redirecting to a specific address like that. With this in mind I have reset your domain to our name servers (as directed by GoDaddy) and set up the following redirect: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/homeandgardennj.com%252Fdigital-magazine%252F/redirect/homeandgardennj.wordpress.com
You should see that working in the next 24 hours or so, and then when you visit homeandgardenguides.com you will be redirected to https://homeandgardennj.com/digital-magazine/ instead.
Hope this helps!

Hi again,
I wanted to add that for me the redirection is already working. I recorded a video so you can see what I see: https://d.pr/v/BfRA8R

Hi jerry,
Thank you so much. It worked.
May I know what config you added in the backend?
