Redirect from free to paid URL?
-
Hello. I’ve had a free WP site for years, but I want to get a personal plan and domain name. However, something that’s put me off doing this for a long time is because I’ve already put my free domain (.wordpress.com) online and in print. People have told me that getting a new domain name would automatically mean that anyone who visits the free domain URL will be redirected to my new paid domain. But is that true? I need this sorted once and for all.
If redirect isn’t an option, I find this frustrating because it means that anyone who uses WP for free essentially has their site, which will be known to many people, wiped out until they’re made aware of the new domain.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I need to figure this out since if people who visit my .wordpress.com site aren’t taken to my website under a new paid domain automatically, I’ve essentially paid £34 to lose online visibility…

Hey @xanturi. I am sure this must be frustrating. This guide should be able to sort you out.

Suilad, @xanturi 👋 🙂
It seems that your account only has one free site (https://thoodauthor.wordpress.com/).
However, you are indeed an administrator on two more sites with Personal plans (both sites have custom domains as primary site addresses).
So, if you open https://theecologicalcitizen.wordpress.com, it will automatically redirect to its primary address → https://blog.ecologicalcitizen.net. ✅
The same goes for https://rewildingecologicalcitizen.wordpress.com—it will take you to https://rewilding.ecologicalcitizen.net. ✅
If I didn’t mention the site you’re referring to, please share its URL so we can check if there are any issues 😊
