Redirect Loop and cant get at settigns to check any further

  • Unknown's avatar

Please can someone help me, I just transferred my domain over to my WordPress site and now I’m stuck in a redirect loop.

I’ve tried clearing my cache to no avail, but I’m now stuck because of the redirect loop because I can’t see the settings. So I can’t set up the SFTP as I can’t get to the settings and and I saw the instruction on checking URL settings but again cant get to the setting.

I dont know what to do next. Please help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You find all server settings in your wordpress.com account as described at https://wordpress.com/support/hosting-configuration/

So I tried to disconnect the domain and now I can access my site settings, I’ve reconnected it and can still see the site settings and pages etc. I’m not sure how long it will last for as it took a couple of hours to go into the loop before. I have been able to copy the settings into an FTP client though.

Now however I may have swwapped one issue for another, when I enter globallysauced.com it redirects to https://globallysaucedcom.wpcomstaging.com/ even in an incognito browser whereas I would have expected it to stay on globallysauced.com so I think I’ve stuffed something up. Does anyone have any ideas, please?

Ok figured out how to make it my primary domain so it stays at the right address however there is now two addresses one for each of them, is this normal? Doesn’t seem like an issue though but but the redirect look is back again.

I have added globallysauced.com as per the below image but the redirrect is still there. The problem definitely seems related to the domain name. Does this make sense?

I’ve also just tried the above with www. before it no improvement.

    Hi there!

I noticed your domain’s nameservers were updated earlier today. This change can take up to 72 hours to take effect due to DNS propagation.

If visiting the domain redirects you to the WordPress.com site, the next step is to set your custom domain as the primary address.

It looks like you did that based on your screenshot above, but it’s no longer set as the primary address. Can you follow our guide here to set globallysauced.com as the primary address again?

    WP
Domains » Change Your Site’s Primary Address
    3 min read
Your primary site address is the domain that people will see in their browser’s address bar when visiting your site. It is the address you use to promote your website. This guide will show you how to switch your site’s primary address, including how to change it from the .wordpress.com or .wpcomstaging.com address to your own domain. Requirements To use a domain as your site’s primary addr

Also, you don’t need to do anything in the site’s wp-config.php file. Primary domains are set through the dashboard, as shown in your screenshot. You may need to clear your browser cache after updating the primary address, in case your browser continues to redirect you due to caching.

Please give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I made my primary domain the wpcomstaging.com. one as a temporary fix at this suggestion https://wordpress.com/support/resolve-jetpack-errors/#tab-wp-admin and can access the site settings.

The problem seems to be isolated to “what is wrong with the domain?” (it was only transferred 13 hours ago if that makes a difference, from squarespace). Please can someone help. If I make my real domain the primary domain the problem comes back so I cannot check the domain settings in my WordPress dashboard as per this from Gemini, but in the wp_config I have set those as a troubleshooting step

Is the issue that it takes time for the domain to come over or do I need help from wordpress on the domain. I am getting errors under the diagnostic but this seems to be that it doesn’t like the email rules (Titan) added. I brought the being able to send email option form wordpress so its doing its own thing and is sending emails

    Hi there!

If you’re unable to view your site after setting globallysauced.com as the primary address, you’ll need to wait for DNS propagation, which can take up to 72 hours to complete. Just so I know what’s happening, could you share a screenshot from your browser after setting globallysauced.com as primary and visiting it?

I temporarily set your domain as primary and was able to view the site without any issues. (I saw the coming soon page, but it was at globallysauced.com.) I’ve since switched the primary address back to the wpcomstaging one.

I think you are facing a DNS propagation issue, which doesn’t really have a fix per se, but you can try clearing your browser cache or using a different internet connection to see if it helps.

I’d also suggest removing anything custom you’ve added to the wp-config.php file. You don’t need them to set a custom domain on WordPress.com sites.

Thanks aisajib , I’ve done that and set the wp_config file back to the origina state and now I’m back on the redirect loop, so can’t use the site settings at all.

Will it just take a few days and then it will be fixed or else any suggestions? It feels more broken now than before

    Thanks aisajib

I think we might have been replying at the same time. I changed the primary domain back to globallysauced.com and when I was clicking on the pages link (pages in my Home) and instead of the pages I got a redirect to the coming soon page, (both screen shots are below). I’ve taken reverted the wp-config.php file, cleared my cookies and cache and tried connecting via my phone but same results.

I’ll leave the settings as is with it connected to globallysauced.com so you can see what I mean, In summary when my primary domain is globallysauced.com I’m stuck in a redirect loop when I click on areas of My Home so I can’t use it. If I disconnect the domain it works.

If it is propogation and its waiting a few days great, if its not what are the next steps?

Thanks for the screenshots! I think there’s a combination of the site’s current privacy settings (Coming soon) and the Paid Memberships Pro plugin, which is redirecting you to the login page.

Here’s what I recommend (I can take these steps for you, too, if you’d like):

    1. Set globallysaucedcom.wpcomstaging.com as primary so that you can access the settings.
    2. Deactivate Paid Memberships Pro (along with all the other plugins that rely on it).
    3. Launch your site.
    4. Immediately after launching, activate Paid Memberships Pro and related plugins.
    5. If everything still works well, set globallysauced.com as the primary address.
    6. Check if the site’s dashboard is accessible. You shouldn’t see the coming soon page anymore, but you may be asked for a separate username/password (See below for more information about this.)

If everything works, feel free to set change your site privacy to Private by following our Privacy Settings guide. You may also wish to consider using a Coming Soon plugin (instead of our built-in coming soon method, which may be causing issues with the Paid Memberships Pro plugin).

By the way, I see that the WordPress.com Log In is already disabled on your site, but I wanted to highlight that you would need a separate username and password to log into the wp-admin dashboard when using a membership plugin.

Our guide here provides details about setting up a wp-admin-specific password (if you haven’t already done so).

If you’re having trouble accessing wp-admin because it asks for a password, please let me know. I’ll be happy to help you with this further.

Could you please try doing that for me please if thats ok and see if it works? I wont be able to give it a go for a few hours as I’ve just left the house and I dont have my computer with me right now.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure! I’ll try these steps for you and get back to you here with more information.

    Hi again,

I’ve taken the steps above. I also replaced the wp-config.php file for your site. I can now access wp-admin while the custom domain is set as the primary address.

The Paid Memberships Pro plugins are currently disabled because I wanted to give you a chance to log in and set up a password for your wp-admin dashboard.

Currently, if you visit globallysauced.com/wp-admin, you can log in by clicking the ‘Log in with WordPress.com’ button. It may not work after you activate the PMP plugins. When you’re back, please follow these steps:

    1. Clear your browser cache. Here’s how to clear your browser cache: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clear-your-browser-cache
    2. Log in and go to https://globallysauced.com/wp-admin/profile.php (You can get there by clicking Users → Profile)
    3. Scroll down and click Set New Password. This password will be specific to the wp-admin dashboard only. Your main WordPress.com account password will remain unaffected.
    4. After setting a password at the link above, click Plugins → Installed Plugins and activate the Paid Memberships Pro and its related plugins.
    5. If you get asked to log in again, please log in with the new password you set in the third step above.
    6. You should then be able to see your dashboard even with the PMP plugins active.

To allow you to log in without needing a separate wp-admin password, I’ve enabled WordPress.com Log In for you.

You’re free to keep it active to log in faster, but since you’re using a membership plugin, if you feel that it’s sending you in a loop again, you can disable the WordPress.com Log In by going to “Jetpack → Settings → scroll to the bottom for WordPress.com login and disable the first toggle.”

Thank you so much that’s solved it, I really appreciate it. Have a great day.
