Redirect old page slug to new page instead of 404
-
I’ve moved a page. The new URL is better, but the old URL is published in marketing material.
I need to redirect users from the old URL (now 404’ing) to the new URL.
Is that possible?
thanks,

No I’m sorry that’s not possible on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

How about on paid-for versions?

Hi again,
Sorry I can’t give you an definitive answer. This is why. Your theme is a premium theme and we Volunteers answering questions on this forum have no knowledge of how they are designed to operate. When you purchased your premium theme what came with that purchase was support directly from the theme designer in the Premium Theme Support Forum. There is a link for the specific Premium Theme support forum under Appearance -> Themes in your blog’s Dashboard -
I don’t think the ability to redirect old URLs is theme-based. I think it’s functionality that is or isn’t in WordPress.com as a product, not on a per-theme basis, but I could be wrong.

Okay, I have been here for nearly 6 years and that functionailty has never existed and does not exist now on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

It was accomplished once, on my blog, by staff. Staff can do something like that, but you need to give them a compelling reason to do it, not just “I deleted the page and changed my mind.” And you will have to contact them directly.
In my case they did it because my hits had dropped by over 60% and we thought the broken link was part of the problem. Turned out it was insignificant.

I have to say I’m surprised this functionality has not been implemented, yet. Redirection has been a fundamental feature of HTTP and HTML since the web’s inception. I don’t like the fact that my slugs are written in stone and can never be changed.
