redirect permalink issues
-
I published a mapped blog — call it myoldblog.com — on wp.com for 4 years.
Eventually I built substantial traffic. This past week, I purchased the redirect service from Automatic.
I then redirected the domain myoldblog.com to the new domain mynewsite.landthis is a self hosted WP.org solution from siteground that also includes ecommerce functionaly (in this case, the woocommerce plugin)
as it turns out the permalink structure of my new blog
is as follows.https://mynewsite.land/index.php/20xx/xx/xx/my-new-post
here is a link to an actual new post at my new site/domain
according to the support documentation at WP.com ( wp redirect documentation ) the new site being redirected to should either have the permalink structure of the form
http://mynewsite.land/2016/01/15/my-new-post
or I should have specified (in some, and I am not sure exactly how I should have done this) that the redirect of my old domain point to the correct blog permalink structure for my new domain.
this i failed to do. I just mapped myoldblog.com to newsite.land
as a result, all my old posts are getting 404’ed at my new site, and i am getting a 100% bounce rate from google analytics on any users
who try to access my old posts via search enginesi also just noticed from the support documentation that (supposedly) the redirect will only point to a non SSL URL
however, i have tested this, and entered on my browser’s address bar my old domain in the form of http://myoldblog.com
it works correctly
and redirects to https://mynewsite.landso this SSL caveat seems suspect
My questions are these:
how can I
a) verify technically that a 301 redirect is taking place (and nopt a 302 or something else)
b) have my old posts point correctly to my new site’s blog permalink structure without having to pay WP again
c) do all this without (further) incurring google ranking penalties as to supposedly duplicative content?
4) continue to access the custom css file of my old blog?Any help re this matter would be most appreciated./
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

i have related issues that i would really appreciate it if a happiness engineer with a webmaster background can help me with. just to be clear though, i am a paying WP customer (domain mapping and custom css) , for the rest of this year, even though i no longer need domain mapping, which i had previously paid for, then had to pay additionally for the redirect to my new site.
so to summarize this Support request, users get a 404 when they try to follow a link to from one of my WP.com posts that shows up in an organic search on some search engine.
i need to fix that issue, which is what this thread is about. I specifically need to understand if you perform a 301 redirect. The difference between redirect types is crucial from an SEO perspective, but I could not find any docomentation on WP.com on this matter.
related to this entire subject are several questions that i would appreciate have someone with webmaster expertise be nice enough to supply an answer:
1. in a wp.com redirect, is the post code (ie, html/css/js etc for the old post that is still sitting on wp.com server) executed on the wp server or sent for exection on my self hosted wp.org server? i dont see how that is possible, but i hav to ask for verification.
2. if the former (ie, the post executes on the wp.com server, where the code resides), how can i can access the html or css to make changes? right now this code is no longer available to me.
3. if the latter, how can i download my custom css — i have written a considerable amount of complex css and do not wish to trash the work of 4 years
4. does the old post get executed by my new theme or the old theme that i used when my blog was running under wp.com? there are obvious issues here that are not discussed in any way in WP.com documentation. how does the look and feel of old posts and new ones remain consistent? what if my new theme does not support certain things needed by the old theme…?
5. Finally, as you know, Google Analytics require you to specify in detail which properties you want run traffic analysis against. To do this, you have to put custom Google code in the header of your installation. Without this code, Google cannot know if you actually own an installion or run analytics. The question is, how can Google distinguish between traffic that is being redirected from the old property and traffic that is “native” to the new WP installation? And right now, I have place the code for both on my new installation heaters. Is that correct?
I would really appreciate any help as to figuring the technically correct answers to the above. Many thanks. PS and as a reminder, I am a current paying customer of WP.com, so please do not tell me that these are .org issues. The technical issues I need help with involve connecting both environments, my wp.com blog and the wp.org one that is self hosted.

hey WP
I am trying to redirect needlepointland.com
to
https://needlepoint.land/index.php/erins-blog
how do I do this? the WP redirect (which I have already paid for!) keeps sending needlepointland.com to needlepoint.land. This is not what I want.
Can I redirect to a subdirectory?
Please advise. I have been waiting for days for an answer!!! Thanks.
