Redirect queries to domain to WordPress blog

  • Unknown's avatar

The blog name I want to use is not available on WordPress.com

If I purchase a domain from WordPress so I can use the blog name I want, can I redirect queries to my WordPress purchased domain back to my WordPress blog?

I do not want to create a website at this time, only a blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

I want to confirm exactly what you’re asking.

It sounds as if you’d like to maintain a WordPress.com blog with a custom domain. So, as an example only, you’d like to change rbeckmann75.wordpress.com to rbeckmann75.com. Is this correct?

If so, it’s absolutely possible. You can register a domain name by clicking on Store in your site’s Dashboard here:
    beckmann75.wordpress.com/wp-admin

    Then select Add a Domain.

When you register your new domain name, it will take some time to become permanent. Once it’s live, all your visitors can visit your blog at rbeckmann75.com (example domain name only).

Your WordPress.com blog name does not need to match your custom domain name. You can choose any domain name you’d like.

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

    Thanks thatrobyn,

What I want to confirm is that if they ONLY key in (example) rbeckmann75.com (no blog name in front) and I do NOT build a website, can they/will they be redirected to the (email visible only to moderators and staff). Can/ will the blog become the default URL for the domain?

If I later build a website, then I would want them to go to perhaps a different default URL than the blog for the website

    Hi Robert!

If you add (example) rbeckmann75.com to your site rbeckmann75.wordpress.com, your visitors will all see your blog when they type rbeckmann75.com into their address bar.

You do not need to build an additional website. You can keep everything as-is and your blog will be “represented” by your custom domain name, rbeckmann75.com.

In the future, if you build a new site, we can redirect your domain to point to that new site. The domain name will belong to you, as long as you want it. You can use it for any site you wish.

I see you did register a new domain: biglies.net

If you have any questions about it, or about domains in general, please let me know! Thanks.

    Thanks again thatrobyn,

I registered a domain (biglies.net), hoping to be able to use a blog address (rootproblems.biglies.net) that was not available on wordpress.com thinking I could use what ever name I wanted for “myblog” if I had my own domain (i.e. myblog.mydomain.com). It appears that even if I have my own domain, the “myblog” part still has to be unique to wordpress.com.

Related, what is the relationship between user name and the first part (“myblog”) of the blog name (I believe “myblog” defaults on account creation to “user name”?) and does the username show up anywhere publicly?

I definitely want to change the blog address (“myblog”) and I have the WP link to do that. http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

I choose a different (and available) name for my blog and user name (lyingbyommision) (i.e. related to propaganda).

I also see where user name shows up.

    Hi Robert,

You are the only person who will see lyingbyomission or lyingbyomission.wordpress.com. That is the WordPress.com site where all your content will be stored and managed for your blog. Your visitors will never see these names. You only see them because you’re the blog administrator/owner. Your visitors will ONLY see your custom domain: biglies.net.

It doesn’t matter what your WordPress.com site is called, in fact, because your visitors will not see anything except: biglies.net.

I hope this helps clear things up. If I can help further, drop me a note.
