Redirect to root directory not working
-
Hello!
I’m doing maintenance on this site and having an issue. I’m used to typical wordpress installs on hosts. I cannot get the redirect to work where the homepage is in a different directory. Meaning it goes to the root domain. It had been doing that and just stopped according to the client. The index.php file does not have this code in it:
require( dirname( __FILE__ ) . ‘/wp-blog-header.php’ );I’ve tried adding it in but it does not work.
Could someone please help me?Thank you!
Nancy
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s not possible on any WordPress.com hosted blog. There is no blogger access to the database here. Read the comparison please http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
-
Ah… thank you for that info! However that it
- was
redirecting for quite a while now… I did not set this site up but when I made some updates a few months ago the wordpress site was going to the root domain. Is there another way to do this using the wordpress.com set up?
-
http://earthheartreiki.wordpress.com/ is the URL of that site. We do not provide support for forwarding and masking. What exactly is it that you are you attempting to achieve?
-
The wordpress site here has been going to http://www.earthheartreiki.com for quite a while. I’m not sure how that was accomplished but it was indeed working that way as I had visited it many times. The client told me it recently stopped doing that. As I deal with the wordpress installs on servers this is new to me.
Thanks for the help!

The site earthheartreiki.wordpress.com has domain mapping pointing to the domain earthheartreiki.com.
However, the domain earthheartreiki.com is now pointing to hosting at GoDaddy rather than the hosting here. If you need to modify the site, you will not be able to do so via WordPress.com. Instead, you will need to log into the hosting provider and access the WordPress files via FTP or another method.
-
Well that explains it. Something must have happened on the domain side. Thank you for that info. I’ll will check into this more.
-
One more question as this thing still has me confused… can I just change the earthheartreiki.com domain to point back to here? That was how it has been for a long time I guess. Not sure how it got changed to point to godaddy. Where do I reset that? At the domain registrar?
-
Is this just a matter of setting the nameservers at the domain registrar? If so I’m having trouble locating what I need to change those to.
-
To point the domain back to WordPress.com, go to https://earthheartreiki.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains and click “Edit domain”. Then choose the option “Edit DNS”. You will see four records. For the A record, hover over it until you see a pencil, and click on that. Simply delete the A record information listed, and that should point the site back to WordPress.com.
Note that there will be a delay as the records update across the internet, so it may not work immediately.
If you run into more issues with this, just let me know.
-
Thank you for the clear instructions. I clicked the pencil, it asked me “Are you sure you wish to edit this domains A records? This will result in your domain no longer loading your WordPress.com site.”
I clicked ok and it automatically removed the A and CNAME. I clicked SAVE they reverted back. Here is a screen shot of http://oi59.tinypic.com/2jag9ed.jpg

Ah, I see what’s going on. The domain was registered through Wild West Domains (http://www.wildwestdomains.com/), which is also our domain registrar partner, and I missed the fact that it wasn’t actually registered through WordPress.com. Because of this, the DNS tool won’t work to update the name servers. You will need to log into your domain registrar account to update this information.
-
Its actually registered with domaindo.com at this point anyway. I tried changing the nameservers with them and though it did indeed make it show in the correct spot the site was totally messed up. Just skewed and misplaced everything for some reason. So I reset them. We may need to keep the domain at the wordpress url I guess. I’m just now wordpress.com savvy enough to correct this. Ü
-
You need to point the domain to whichever hosting has the content you wish to display. If your WordPress.com site is current, and you want to keep updating it with us, that’s great.
Once the name servers are again pointing here, and it has updated, let me know if you need any more help with it.
-
I’ve updated the nameservers again but now when I go to earthheartreike.com it auto sends me to the wordpress version.
This is a screenshot of the domain registrar nameservers: http://oi57.tinypic.com/rwqauq.jpg
And this is the the wordpress.com domain area just to show what its set as. Since I”m kinda lost in there. http://oi62.tinypic.com/t68avk.jpg

Everything looks correct now.
The final step is to update your primary domain (as shown in your second screenshot) to have earthheartreike.com rather than earthheartreike.wordpress.com show up in the address bar in the browser.

It’s working!
I can’t thank you enough for walking me through that. I am copying this info for future reference. I manage about a dozen wordpress sites I’ve customized out the wazoo but this wordpress.com thing is a different beast.
You have a phenomenal day!
Nancy
One WP site I created and manage: http://www.royrivers.com . You know… just to show I’m not completely ignorant. :-P
-
Congrats! I’m glad you were able to get it to work.
Please note that some visitors may not see the site immediately as all of this information has to propagate, so please don’t panic if that happens. :)
