Redirecting changed path names on old site to new pages on WordPress
-
I am migrating a web site and WP.com won’t let me replicate a lot of my old path names, even though I bought a custom domain. Can I create a list of old/wrong path names and have them redirect to new path names?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Could you explain if you’re moving to or from WordPress.com? And are you moving to or from WordPress.org?
If you are moving to a WordPress.org self-hosted site, you can use a plugin, or find/replace to make those adjustments.
If you are exporting from WordPress.org, and importing to WordPress.com, the URLs should be adjusting accordingly.
Please send me more details, and I can assist further.
Thanks much.

I am moving from a self-maintained Drupal site to WordPress.com.
For now I have a subdomain mapped to the new site on WordPress. Long term I will move the root domain to WordPress.
Several hundred other sites link to various parts of my existing site. I’m trying to reproduce those links as much as possible – I’ve succeeded in many cases.
Some path names, like “node/123” or “archives/1234” don’t seem to work even if I have a custom domain name. I try to create such names by creating a set of hierarchical “pages.” The number-only name doesn’t get created – instead I get something including a hyphen.
Right now I have the old site redirecting individual URLs to the new site, but those redirects will go away when I move the root domain name.

Hello there!
In some cases, your adjustments may be possible by adjusting a the page’s slug. I can take a look.
Could you give me a link or two to some pages that you’re trying to adjust, and the path names you were hoping to create?
Thanks much.

I have two examples. The first is something I HAVE NOT redirected yet from my old site. Note that the node number 404 is simply a coincidence and has nothing to do with 404 errors.
Existing link: http://cryptosmith.com/node/404
New link: http://b.cryptosmith.com/2014/06/06/net-neutrality/Below is something that I already HAVE redirected.
Existing link: http://cryptosmith.com/archives/70
New link: http://b.cryptosmith.com/2008/05/31/stream-reuse/According to Google, there are web sites that refer to those existing links. While Google and other engines may detect and remember the redirects from my old site, the referring sites won’t necessarily update their own links.

Hello there,
I checked in with our developers and was told that we don’t have a better solution for you, as we don’t allow custom permalink structures.
According to Google, there are web sites that refer to those existing links. While Google and other engines may detect and remember the redirects from my old site, the referring sites won’t necessarily update their own links.
It’s true that generally within 4-6 weeks search engines update their indexes. You can also use our webmaster tools to register your site with search engines, which can expedite the situation.
The “good” news is that you’ll be able to see all your referrers in your site stats. So, if you want, you can manually check on your links from their sites, and personally ask them to make the adjustment on their side if possible. This is far from perfect, of course, but does allow for some corrections, if you need to make them.
Sorry I don’t have a better solution for you at this point.
You sound quite educated in the matter, but if you needed, a self-hosted WordPress.org site would give you more flexibility in this type of situation.
Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
