Hi pagehamilton
Are you trying to map your existing domain to your WordPress site?
If yes then are you talking about the Name Servers that you need to point your domain to WordPress. Here is the support document that will give you more information on Name Servers:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#2-point-your-domain-to-usWordPress Prefer users to add Name Servers will mapping because WordPress IP’s can change over time.
If your registrar requires A records, we can tag this post as ‘modlook’ and staff will provide you with a list of our current IP addresses.
Hope this helps.

Thanks very much, shubhamgmath! I’m looking into the option of changing the nameservers, and meanwhile this site seems to help me get the IP addresses: https://cachecheck.opendns.com/

a follow up question – if I use the name server method vs. IP address method, it seems that this gets me into a fee-based plan for the wordpress.com blog, which I may do later, but at this point I want to only use the basic/free plan. Can you confirm I’m understanding this correctly?
thank you, page

The link to the support document provided above includes the following:
if you prefer to keep your domain and site at different providers, you also have the option to “map” your existing domain to your site. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain. Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain, or transfer one you already own
