Redirecting from free site after upgrading

I want to create a site say johnsmith.wordpress.com and later I might consider upgrading to paid plan and johnsmith.com (assuming the domain is available). Will it be possible to move the content to johnsmith.com and have the previous site johnsmith.wordpress.com automatically redirect to the new one?

Yes that’s how it works. You don’t have to move any content. Everything will seamlessly redirect to the custom domain. Anyone typing in your old .wordpress.com address will be redirected. The old address will still exist in the background. Should you ever decide not to renew your custom domain the original wordpress.com site will still exist (although depending how much you customize your upgraded site some features may be lost returning to a free plan).
