Redirects
-
I probably should have thought of this sooner, but when I set this blog up, I imported all my content from solchrom.posterous.com. Posterous, as we all know, is toast. But nearly every post had a few links to related posts at the bottom, and the problem is, almost all of those related links refer to solchrom.posterous.com/whatever. The import process managed to preserve the URL structure of every post, but that didn’t extend to related links. Is it possible to set up a redirect so that any time a user clicks on a link to solchrom.posterous.com/whatever, they’ll be automatically taken to the equivalent solchrom.wordpress.com/whatever?

Hey there @sol12,
Unfortunately, if the links go to their domain, they would have to be the ones to redirect them.
But you could bulk update the posts.
Would you be comfortable exporting the site and using “find and replace” in a text editor to fix the bad links, then importing that again into a test site to be sure they all work?
If you’re not comfortable, let us know.
If you are comfortable with that, let us know & we can send more steps re: getting those corrected posts properly imported into the real site.

Hi supernovia, and thanks for the response.
If I understand correctly, it sounds like what I did when I first moved everything from posterous over to wordpress.com. What gives me pause is that these aren’t the URLs of actual posts — they’re URLs of Related Posts, appearing at the bottom of posts.

When I originally set these posts up in Posterous, these related posts all pointed to Posterous. They stayed that way when I migrated to WordPress. If there’s a way to go through them one by one and change them from solchrom.posterous.com/whatever to solchrom.wordpress.com/whatever, I’m all ears.
My experience with batch search & replace hasn’t been happy, but I’m willing to give it another shot. Please send me the next steps you were referring to.
Thanks!

Hi there,
If there’s a way to go through them one by one and change them from solchrom.posterous.com/whatever to solchrom.wordpress.com/whatever, I’m all ears.
If you prefer to do these one by one you can definitely do so. Just go to Posts ->All Posts and edit each post in turn, update the links to reflect the new URLs of the posts, and save your changes.
If you want to try doing this in bulk with search-and-replace, that cannot be done on the site directly, only on an export file. So export your WordPress.com site, and do the search-and-replace on the export file. Then create a second free site in your account and import there first, to make sure the modified file works. If you’re happy with the result, let us know to empty your main site, and then you can re-import the modified file.
