Hi, I don’t want to publish a blog, I want to “re-do” my website (gazolyne.com) using wordpress. There is already a web site under this address: mine. I did it years ago on iweb and I would like to “overide” it. Where do I start?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First, please realize that there are different flavors of WordPress. Here are some details:
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You could set up a web site on either WordPress.com or on WordPress.org. If you decide to go with the free hosting on wp.COM you would choose a theme, set up your pages, and map your domain. (note: a blog is a website, just a special sort of website and you don’t need to use posts as in a blog, you can use just pages)

If you go with WordPress.ORG, you’d be responsible to set up a host (you would pay for this), use the free software, and design your site. There are a number of free themes as well as paid themes. Visit WordPress.ORG for more details.

Thanks for your answer. I have a web hosting service already which my website runs on. It doesn’t host wordpress sites, so I will find another one, not a problem. I want to know:
    1. Can I use wordpress to make a brand new website with my actual address
    2. when I am ready to “publish it” I would replace my actual website with this new one.
    3. If not, can I use a “temporary address” to design and test my new wbesite and then change the address for my actual website when I am ready to publish?

I’m sorry, I don’t have enough experience to advise. Perhaps you found help at WordPress.org?

I’ve only done this one time:
When I set up my work site on wp.org, I just kept the same host but uploaded wp.org software to NAME.org/wp-1 leaving it unlinked from the menu. It was live online but not accessible unless one knew the link. When I was finished with the new site, I deleted the content of the original pages leaving a re-direct link to my newly designed site.

But if you have to get a different host in order to use the wp.org software, I don’t know what to advise. Nor am I sure I went about my project in the best possible way, though it seems to be working and attracting the folks we are aiming for.

By the way, if you have FTP access to your site with your host I think you can still use the WordPress.ORG software that way. We are on Netscape Solutions but I didn’t go through the system they have on their front/marketing page. I just installed wp.org software via ftp…
