Reduce font size

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am finding the default font size in the free wordpress themes to be enormous. Is there any way to reduce the font size? Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please share a more specified example. Is this all the font on the page? The titles? The posts?

The font of the body of the blog post is huge. I’d like to reduce it.

  • Hi there,

Your theme’s font size for the content area in desktop view is 17px, which is within the standard range for websites. Keep in mind that websites which are intended for viewing on a screen follow different rules and design principles than documents which are intended for printing when it comes to these things.

That said, if you would prefer it to be smaller, the only way to resize the default font is by using custom CSS. This will require the Custom Design upgrade to change it once-off for the entire site.

But you can also do it per-post without upgrading: After writing a post, switch to the HTML editor. Right at the start of the post add:

    div style="font-size: 15px;"

    – Wrap this in arrow brackets.

You can adjust the value to what you’d prefer.

Then right at the end of the post add:

    /div

    – Also wrap this in arrow brackets

The other option is to select a custom font at My Site ->Customize ->Fonts – custom fonts have preset size options that you can apply.

Are all of the templates at 17 px, or are there some that are smaller? Every template I’ve tried turns out to be the large font. It just is liked reading a large print size book–hard to read quickly for most people, and I don’t want to turn people off from my blog.

And I realize web font is different than print. My point is that the font size is really too large and larger than other blog sites I’ve seen out there. The font in this discussion, for example, aren’t as big as the font in my blog. Are there free templates that don’t use such large font? Do the premium ones allow you to reduce the font size? Thank you for your help.

Are you sure your browser ZOOM setting is not the issue? I’m thinking you may need to check your ZOOM setting.

Yes, my zoom size is 100%.

Hi there, there is a selection of fonts that you can choose from at Customize > Fonts.. I would suggests trying a few of those serif-style fonts as not all web fonts will display at the same size when viewed in a browser. Gentium Book Basic is a very similar font, but at the “normal” size, displays slightly smaller than the body (base) font on the theme you are using. Alegreya displays even slightly smaller from my testing.

Thank you, thesacredpath. I like the other font choices you mentioned. Also, I now see that when you’re not using the default font, you can choose “small” to reduce the size. When it says “default,” is there a way to tell what exactly that font is?

    Thanks, everyone.

  • Hi there,

The “default” font size depends on your visitor’s screen size. If they view your site on a mobile phone the font will be larger than viewing it on a desktop computer.

Please note that fonts on the web don’t behave like the ones on a word processor. They’re meant to be viewed and adjusted to a variety of screen sizes instead of being printed in a standard paper size.

My advice is to test different fonts and sizes in a variety of screens (desktop, laptop, phone) and stick with the one that fits your needs.

fstat, I realize that. I’ve worked as a web designer before, and the default font size is larger than you’ll see as the default on most blog sites.

What I need help with most now is the question I posed to thesacredpath:

Thank you, thesacredpath. I like the other font choices you mentioned. Also, I now see that when you’re not using the default font, you can choose “small” to reduce the size. When it says “default,” is there a way to tell what exactly that font is?

    Thanks, everyone.

  • The default size for all the fonts available for your site is 19px and the small option gets you to 13px.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Yes, that is not the question I pasted. I am asking, When it says default, is there a way to tell what the name of the font is.

    Thank you.

  • I’m sorry for misunderstanding your question.

Your current theme’s (Independent Publisher 2) default base font is Georgia and the default font used for headings is San Francisco.

If you’re interested in finding the default fonts used in other themes or any other website you can use a browser extension like WhatFont.

fstat, thank you so much! I’ll check out the extension.

  • You’re welcome and please let me know if you need help with anything else!
