Reducing Sidebar Width/Increasing Photo Width on "Forever" theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have switched to the Forever theme, because I want my photos to appear at least 690 px wide. I did change the custom width from the default of 560 to 690 — but not sure if I had to check the Start Fresh button or what, because it’s not working.
    I also HATE how wide the right sidebar is … and want to reduce it to 190 or 200 from its current 263. Do I have to change the CSS code to do that — and if so, how??? THANKS a million!!

    You have to increase the space available to the images in the content area and reduce the width of the sidebar in addition to increasing the width in the Content Width field. The following will increase the space available in the content area to about 645px. The 21% width for #secondary (the sidebar) takes the widget area down to an overall width of about 190px. Go to Appearance > Custom Design > CSS tab, clear the informational text out of the window and paste the following in and preview it and see what you think.

    #secondary
    width: 21%;
    }

    #content {
    margin-right: 32%;
    }

    If you want your images to show at 690px, we will have to also increase the overall width of the theme (white area). See what you think of the above first though.

    Thanks so much – it definitely worked to reduce the sidebar (see my blog) but I’m most interested in my images showing at 690 px … so can you please tell me how to increase the overall width of the white area so the photos will show up that way?? THANKS!!

    Hi, there! I am thinking of switching from Standard theme to Forever theme and I would also be very interested in how to show my images at bigger than the default. THANKS!

    Also, if I switch from a premium theme to a free one, can I switch back to the premium again at some later point?

    I checked http://whatgives365.wordpress.com/ just now and the image in the “My So-Called Real Life.” post dated August 12th is showing up at about 690px.

    Most of the other images on the home page look good as well.

    I assume the last piece of the puzzle is that you updated the “Content Width” setting on the Appearance > Customize > CSS panel to 690.

    Looks great!

    I switched my customization to this (via D Cole’s suggestion)

    #content { min-width: 690px; }
    #secondary { width: 190px; }

    then did the “Content Width” to 690 — but it was the customization copy that really did the trick!
    THANKS for letting me know you noticed my new, big photos & hope it works for you!!
