Reducing the size of images

Is there an easy way to reduce the file size of images uploaded to a post? I’m concerned about exceeding the max allowable GB. Most of my images are large… 7 mg or so, but could be much smaller for WP posts. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi, @tomlessouth,

Yes, 7MG is a large file size and if you have many of those, you are wise to optimize your photos.

That will have to be done outside of WordPress.com, I personally use PicMonkey to edit images, but at the bottom of the following support doc, others are listed. Please see:

Best Regards, and please let me know if you need additional information.

Christinemaze- thank you for the information. Will certainly be looking at options to address this issue. T

  • Hello @tomlessouth,

Another option is to edit the size in WP Admin, by following the instructions below:

    1. Open “WP Admin” (This is located at the very last menu of your blog interface.)
    2. Click “Media.”
    3. Select “Library.”
    4. Click the image you want to resize.
    5. Click “Edit Image” button below the image.
    6. You will find “Scale Image” on the left side.
    7. Enter the value in pixel to resize the image down. *Please notice that the height is automatically filled.
    8. Click “Scale” button.
    9. Then click “Save” to save the changes you made.

This may be useful if you’re only to edit few images. If you’re to edit a lot of images, @christinemaze’ suggestion is better to use. There are also apps that you can do it by batch. In my case, I use the resize option of Preview on my Mac. It allows me to edit images by batch.

    Regards,
    Rose

    staff-imahappyengineer,

You piqued my curiosity and I did a couple of tests with images > 7MB. I found that when using the editor, it did not lessen my current space used (I changed a 12MB –> 36KB using the above method).
I think this may be due to the fact that you can restore to the original image at any point. So the original must be saved. What are your thoughts.

Let me know if you have found otherwise. I’m here to learn, and would love to know if I’m wrong b/c your method is much easier than using an outside editor. :)

Rose and Christine- I, too, tried Rose’s suggestions. Thank you! It seemed to work ok when using my iPAD. I found (like Christine) that doing so didn’t seem to lessen the current space used… which is really the problem I’m trying to solve. I do use Photoshop but not on the iPAD. Maybe Rose’s methodology will make it easier to move image files into posts. I’m not really a technical guy, so the “wetware”, as my programmer friends refer to people, may well be at the bottom of the issue.

Will have to investigate a nice photo management app for the iPAD, as doing the file downsizing outside WP seems to be the most elegant solution.

Thanks to all for your contributions.

  • Hello @christinemaze, yes you are right. :) It will downsize the photo, but it will not edit the original photo, instead it will create a version with smaller size. It can only be helpful for optimizing the page, so it loads faster. It will not reduce your usage, but increase it because of the version created. Thank you for your curiosity. :) There’s no way to automatically delete the original photo, without having access to the file manager and manually deleting it. If you’re on a premium plan, there’s a plugin for this.

@tomlessouth from iPad, I do screenshots. I take screenshot of the photo, and I use the screenshot for my posts. You can also try app like Photo Compress.

    Regards,
    Rose

If you’re on a premium plan, there’s a plugin for this.

I believe this should say Business Plan, as the Business Plan is the only one that allows plugins. Just a heads-up.

    Best Regards.

  • Yes, that’s Business plan.
