Refresh an existing website without disturbing the actual traffic while doing so
-
We just acquired a business and the website is not up to our expectations. I worked with WordPress in the past and am quite familiar with it and I would like to take my existing website in the WP interface to work on its look and then, publish it once it’s refreshed.
Is this possible? How do I do this in a manner that I don’t feel like a dinosaur?
Many thanks in advance.

Hey there,
You have a couple of options for updating the existing site, or creating a new site entirely without impacting your existing one.
The first option would be to create a staging site; this allows you to work on the existing design in a sandboxed environment and then sync your changes on the production site.
The second option would be to create an entirely new site and either build a new site from scratch or import the existing site content. Then, once the new site is complete, you can connect the domain to the new site to move everything over.
Both of these options provide a similar solution by giving you an environment to make changes to the entire site while the current site is still public. Since you did not share a domain URL I am not sure where the site is hosted so I am not sure what options might be available.
In this case, I would recommend taking advantage of WordPress.com’s features. If the site is already hosted here, we make it easy to spin up a staging site, and then sync your changes once you feel confident with the new site. If the site is self-hosted with another platform, then you can easily import the existing site to WordPress.com using our Move to WordPress.com plugin.
We would never want you to feel like a dinosaur and try to take care of as much of the hassle as possible, such as making sure every domain is secure with free and automated SSL certificates. Our managed hosting is also incredibly fast and designed to maximize your search engine optimization. And if you run into any trouble, we are right here in the forums to help or available over email or live chat on a compatible plan.
Use the Move to WordPress.com plugin to migrate a self-hosted WordPress site to WordPress.com.
