I just bought a “premium theme” not knowing that I wouldn’t be able to use it without upgrading for $100 a year. You shouldn’t let people buy the theme without warning them that you have to upgrade to use it. I feel like I got scammed. Please refund ASAP

What extra upgrade are you referring to – a Premium theme is a stand alone purchase – no other upgrade required.
What is the theme you bought and did you buy it from WordPress.COM or someone else??

Where are you seeing the information that people have to upgrade to use a premium theme? Or do you mean you bought a theme elsewhere and didn’t realize those were for WordPress.ORG sites only? If the latter, just ask for your money back; it’s a common mistake.

WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers.
Provided you are logged in under the same username account that purchased the upgrades, you can request a refund yourself directly from the Store section of your Dashboard

Gridspace has some ability to change things in it but that is done to the theme itself. Sorry I don’t do themes so all I know is that you can change a lot on the Premium themes and there is a Support forum for just your Premium Theme – sorry don’t have the link but should be in your Dashboard I think
If you are referring to the Custom Design (CSS) Upgrade that is only $ 30.– and is not related to the theme.

If you want to customize it OUTSIDE of the normal theme options lissted here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/gridspace/ then yes, what you want is the Custom Design upgrade. If you want to customize any theme, that is what you need.
