Refunded Domain Name Put Back on the "Market" for Purchase Elsewhere

  • Unknown's avatar

I need my domain name put back on the market to purchase with another registrar. I purchased it through WordPress but changed my mind, got a refund, and wanted to purchase it through another registrar.

Now the registrar says it’s taken and I think it’s by me because of complications on this end of things.

  • Howdy,

With domain names, when they’re cancelled in the first couple of days, it still takes about five days for the domain to return to the marketplace (by the way the domain name system is designed) and not something we can speed up.

Please note, though, that if you cancel an existing domain (outside of the initial purchase period), it can take months for it to re-appear in the marketplace. Generally, it is almost always advisible to transfer the domain name, instead of canceling it.

In your case, we can either attempt to un-cancel it with the domain provider, then point to the service you’d like to use instead of WordPress.com (as domain names can’t be transferred within the first 60 days—the domain system has a number of rules like this to prevent abuse) or you can keep checking for it to return to the market naturally.

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Thank you for your quick reply! can you please elaborate on the difference between it taking 5 days to return and taking possibly 60 days to return? Like, what is the determining factor as to how long it will take…?

  • If it’s cancelled in the first 48 hours, it’ll pop back up in about five days. If the domain name is “mature” (e.g. past the refund window), it takes significantly longer for a cancelled domain to return to the market (circumstances vary a bit).

With all new domains, purchased anywhere, that “mature”, the registrar where you purchase it has to keep it for 60 days before being allowed to transfer to a different registrar.

Within that 60 days, we can still “point” your domain to any service (by changing the nameservers, or other DNS records).

In short, whether we un-cancel it or you pick up back up off the market when it returns, you can use your domain name wherever you like.

    Cheers!

Awesome. Thank you so much for the clarification, I only had the domain for a few hours before I cancelled it so i’ll keep an eye on it and hopefully it will become available again within the next 5 days.

    Thanks again for your help!

  • Anytime. Best of the luck with your site!
