Regaining Domain Name
-
I had signed up for a free trial w/ Word Press business with a private/custom domain. I decided that it would not suite our needs so I cancelled and deleted assuming that the domain name would go back to the pool (it was never paid for so there is no monetary incentive to keep it). How do I get it back so I use it!?

Hi there. Free WordPress.com URLs are never recycled. If you deleted the free WordPress.com URL (e.g. yoursite.wordpress.com), that is gone forever.http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/
Custom domains, once cancelled, can become available again for registration, but it can take as long as 90 days before that domain is available again and there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to re-register it as someone else may already be waiting to register that domain the moment it becomes available. WordPress.com has no control over this process as they don’t own the custom domains, they’re merely a registrar that can help you register one. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/cancel-domain/

Thanks. Sorry, it was a custom domain. It was pretty specific so I’m sure we’ll get it back once it’s available again. I’ll just have to keep checking until it is. Thanks, again, for the response!

You could always use a drop catching service like https://www.dropcatch.com/HowItWorks/Overview to try and snatch up that domain the moment it does become available. Some domain registrars like GoDaddy also allows you to back-order a domain so they try and get it for you when it becomes available.
I’ve never done this myself, so please don’t take this as an endorsement, but it’s an option that exists for you.
If you do get the domain you can then use it to set up a self-hosted website or map it to your free WordPress.com site.
