Did you buy the domain mapping through WordPress or did you already own the name?
You can cancel your upgrades which you pay for on WordPress.com each year.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgradesThis is not exactly what you are looking to do, but I think the same contact form would work. I’ve also put a modlook for staff to see this topic. It would be very useful if you would specify what you are now paying for and what you’d like to cancel. If it is beyound the 30 day window you won’t get any refunds, but it would stop automatic billing for services you don’t use.

Hi Stacy,
Hope you had a great weekend. Looking at your account, you purchased your domain name (1495sports.com) through WordPress.com. To keep that domain, you’ll either need to continue to pay for it through WordPress.com (while using it on whatever other service/hosting provider you’d like) or transfer the domain to another registrar.
Your other upgrade—a 10 GB space upgrade—won’t be needed if you transfer away from WordPress.com.
If you have any particular questions, please do let me know. Cheers!

Hey Stacy,
On WordPress.com, we don’t allow paid sponsorship. The closest thing is our WordAds program ( http://wordads.co ) that pays you out for ad revenue from ads placed on your site.
WordPress.org-based sites allow sponsorship without restriction. More about the difference is found here: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
If you do need a host, I’ve used BlueHost the most myself, but we have a few others also listed here: http://get.wp.com/hosting
Please let me know if you need anything else or have any questions. Cheers!

@kraftbj Do you know if one transfers to a BlueHost or DreamHost and things don’t work out could they switch to another. Say if I switch to BlueHost and don’t like it could I then try DreamHost. Just wondering.
Thanks,
StacyPS: Do you think there’d be a way for WordPress.com and org to ever merge I honestly like WordPress but don’t have the knowledge to work the .org site.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Stacy,
Sure, you can move between hosts. It does require a little effort (setup account on new provider, download all the files from your current provider, grab a backup copy of the database from the current provider, upload the files to the new provider, upload the backup database copy to the new provider, verify settings, done).
Some hosts (I’m not sure if DreakHost or BlueHost are ones) provide migration services to do this for you. Some free, some as a paid service.
In my site’s history on .org, I’ve had it on four different hosts I think.
They won’t merge per se— WordPress.com is, basically, a hosted version of WordPress.org already, but our differences are what enables us to run 40 million-some-odd websites without going broke or having outages because of poor code. We are all part of the same family, though, so we are constantly looking at ways we can help all WordPress users, not just the .com ones.
There is a plugin called Jetpack that we include a lot of the unique features of WordPress.com for WordPress.org sites. There will always be some technical debt (installing, updates, etc) on WordPress.org, but the goal is to make it as simple as possible for the end user.
One idea of this is with the new version of WordPress coming out in the next week or so (3.7), it will automatically install minor security updates to help your WordPress.org site stay secured. Major releases will still be manual as of now, but it’s one step toward helping users maintain their sites without needing a PhD in computer science ;-).
Cheers!
