regarding using existing top level category and adding a sub category

When I go to All Posts, my only option is ‘add a new category’. I don’t want to add a new PARENT category, I want to use an existing parent category and under it a sub-category. For example. I want to use the existing parent category ‘Switzerland’ and add the sub-category ‘Economy’ under it. No matter what I type or where I type it, I only see the Add a New Category option. If under Choose a parent category, I select Switzerland, it won’t allow me to add a sub-category.

    Hi,

I presume that you’re referring to a WordPress.com site. By default all categories are added as top-level categories. You can change any category to a subcategory at the Manage Categories page. The “Categories” item under All Posts is a link to this page. At the Manage Categories page, simply click on any category and you’ll be given the opportunity to change the level and choose a parent category.

This option is described, but not very well, in the Add Categories section of the Organize Posts with Categories support page.

Clicking on a category at the Manage Category page opens the “Edit Category” module for that category. You can also reach the “Edit Category” module by clicking on the three-dot toggle menu for any category and choosing the “Edit” option.
