Register blog name
-
I want to create a blog that for NOW, I want to keep the .”wordpress”.com part of the name.
But eventually, I want to switch so that it is just the name of the blog without “wordpress”, and then add advertisers etc.
Where should I register that domain name, minus the wordpress, so that no one else takes it? Can I do it though wordpress.org or do I need to go to godaddy?
Also, should I bother to register the .net as well?

Check the domain mapping FAQ here. Domain mapping won’t let you add ads to a wp.com blog.
You can buy your domain here (thought wordpress), but if you’re thinking of moving to a self hosted blog, it might be better to buy it elsewhere.
Also, you may want to check out what folks are saying about GoDaddy. I haven’t heard all that many good things about them.
About the .net, it’s up to you.
Some say to do the domain mapping right away so it’s a seamless transition between your wp.com blog and your self hosted blog.

I know that I’d have to use wordpress.org for advertising, I did read through the FAQ and the differences between the two. But I’m just trying to get up and going before I switch over. WordPress.com seems easier for now.

Well, I’d suggest you buy your domain name now and use domain mapping to apply it to your blog here. Then once you switch over, you won’t lose readers or your blog ranking.

Thanks Vivian. That’s what I was trying to say. I shouldn’t give advice at whatever early o’clock that was when I posted :-)
