I currently have an active site,I am looking at porting it to WP. How would I keep the current site active while I build the new one here? Use a WP domain name, then link up later?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Bumping due to no answer.

  • Hi there,

I take it the currently active site is hosted somewhere else?

To use it here, first you’ll need a free WordPress.com address, and then you can import your content and otherwise set up your site at that address. You can even set the site to private while you work on it so Google doesn’t index it which might lead to duplicate content conflicts with the active site, and so people don’t discover it by accident while you’re still busy with it.

Once you’re ready to make the WordPress.com site the active site, you’ll need to add a plan to it so you can use the Domain Mapping upgrade to connect your domain to the site. Then point your domain to us via your domain provider, and the domain will start showing the WordPress.com site instead of your self-hosted site.

You can find more info at these links, but feel free to ask if anything is unclear.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

Thanks, that is what I figured, but wanted to be sure. Making it private is what I was more interested in since, as you said, I don’t want people (or bots) getting confused over the two sites.

So far as the domain name, I do not own it, they have it parked at a friend’s company and prefer to keep it that way, so it will be redirected to the WP site once it’s up.

  • To set the site to private, once it’s created go to My Site ->Settings. You’ll see the privacy option there.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Okay, I do have a question, and this is very aggravating part of WP. I currently have a blog on WP, but am constantly stymied by how to start a new blog or, in this case, a website. It seems that I have to log out of my WP account to get to the screen when I can create a new blog / website. Is there an easier way to do this?

  • While logged into your account, click on this link:

    https://wordpress.com/start/site/

If you click on My Sites ->Switch Site you should also see a link saying Add New WordPress at the bottom, which will take you to the same page.

Hmm, I found the link you’re talking about on the Switch Sites, but it’s not as easy as you say.

I am on my main blog site
I click on My Sites at the top
      I click on Switch Sites
It returns a list of my sites in the main panel
I now have to click on My Sites again
Now I click, again, on Switch Sites
Now I get a list in the sidebar that shows my site and the option to add a new site

It seems to be a multi-step process that is not very intuitive. Kind of like trying to find the Support Form when you’re at the main page of your site.

  • It sounds like you clicked My Sites from the front end or WP-Admin dashboard of your site, in the black admin bar. That will first take you to the My Sites interface, yes. We’re still working on consolidating those navigations, but thanks for the feedback.

Where is the My Sites you were talking about?

  • If you go to the WordPress.com home page, i.e. the Reader, it looks like this if you click on My Site:

    https://cloudup.com/cucAVVpT21s

As opposed to how it looks when you click it from the front end of the site or the WP-Admin dashboard:

    https://cloudup.com/cxKjSiQzZx5

On the blue masterbar you immediately go to the site list with the add site option. With the black masterbar you first need to get to the page with the blue masterbar before you’ll have that option.

I agree that this is a bit convoluted, but as I mentioned we’re working on that :)
