Registered domain, need plug-ins

Hello, I am having a problem with my new blog. Everyone told me to “use WordPress”, so I came to WordPress.com, registered the domain I wanted, and quickly found out that this is intended to be a simplified “WordPress for dummies” implementation that doesn’t support full functionality– specifically, no plug-ins.

So, then I went to BlueHost and signed up for a WordPress account there, but now as I am trying to transfer the domain I just registered, I see that I have to wait 60 days? So I don’t really know what to do. Do you have any option that allows me to start using plug-ins with my site, but that doesn’t require me to wait 60 days?

    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Robert Nickel

Absolutely Robert! In the meantime, you can point your site to Bluehost by changing the name servers as described here:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

Can you give that a try?

Thanks Jeremey, I see how to do that and it looks pretty simple. My only question then is about billing. I am in my 14 day free trial for the $99 WordPress.com membership (which includes a domain), but if I switch to Bluehost, then I won’t want to pay that $99 here. Can I still have that name service if I go back to the free WordPress.com membership?

You’ll need to pay separately for the domain in order to keep oneforjesus.net, but you don’t need to pay the entire $99 bundle. There are two options:

    1. You can cancel the Premium bundle yourself here:

    https://oneforjesus.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades

When you cancel the bundle, you’ll be given an option to keep and pay for the domain. Do not cancel the domain. You should be able to pay $26 to keep it.

    2. I can remove the Premium bundle for you and email you a manual payment request for the cost of the domain.

Let me know how you would like to move forward!

OK, I think that answers all my questions. You have been very helpful; thank you. So, just to make sure, I don’t have any options if I wanted to stay with WordPress.com and yet use all the features, right? So going to a different host, paying the $26 for the domain, and canceling the rest of the bundle is my only option now? I just want to be sure I’m doing the right thing. Thanks!

If you would like to use plugins, you will need to move to a self-hosted site. This sounds like the best option for what you’re looking for:

going to a different host, paying the $26 for the domain, and canceling the rest of the bundle

That way, you can continue to use the domain with your self-hosted site.

If you have any trouble getting this setup or canceling your bundle, please let me know!
