Registration changes

  Hi, I have been trying to remove the username field from registration or make it a non-required field so that when someone registers, they will automatically have their username be the name of their email (without the characters after the @ sign such as @gmail.com) or whatever they entered into the username field.

  For example, I would register with the email (email visible only to moderators and staff) and put in a password and confirmation password without putting anything in the username field. I want the username to default to johndoe since no username was entered but It won’t work since the username field cannot be blank.

  Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
