  Before, there was a system to do the connection of domain name with WordPress for free of cost. Now it is mandatory to pay and take plans?

  In order to make use of custom domains for your website with WordPress.com you would need to sign up for one of the paid plans, yes.

  You can find out more information about this at the following link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  If you would like to do this without paying you will need to find a different host and use the open source WordPress software from WordPress.org

  On WordPress.com, we offer free addresses containing “.wordpress.com” and some “.blog” subdomains. However, custom domains using these extensions are only available through paid plans:

  The WordPress.org software @starker3 mentioned is installed on a third party host of your choice and separate from WordPress.com.
