Release DNS to Bluehost

    Hello,

I had a wordpress.com domain I registered today and realized I needed a wordpress.org host by Bluehost. My site is still pointing to the wordpress.com registrar. How can I get the new site fully hosted on BlueHost? Thanks!

  • Hey there,

If you’re wanting to use your domain at a different host, you should never cancel it at your current host – once you decide to cancel your domain, there is no guarantee that you will be able to reacquire it in the future. Someone else could gain access to it. Also, it usually takes a few weeks for your domain registration to clear and become available once you cancel it. There isn’t an exact time, however, so you’ll be checking consistently to see when it becomes available.

If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to another site

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

For more information on using the domain elsewhere, please see:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

If you recently registered the domain, you have to wait 60 days before you are able to transfer your domain to a different host, but in the meantime, you can use the domain with your site by pointing the nameservers over to your new host:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/

I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore the domain back to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back.

Let me know if you would like for me to try and regain the domain for you.

    Thanks!

    Hi Darnell:

Thank you very much for your response. It’s a lesson learned for me, trying to do too much at once. Yes if you can contact the registrar that would be great. Just let me know! I will make sure to be careful going forward.

Great. I checked bluehost but it said it was still locked. Guessing it takes time to propagate. I’ll try to transfer it tonight or tomorrow. Thanks again.

  • It is locked because you cannot transfer the domain for 60 days after the initial registration. you must point the nameservers over to your site host if you want to use the domain in the meantime:
