releasing default domain pointer from WP.com

I’ve posted this in the support area but got no response.

I started using WP.com with my own company domain name manyagem.com. That was fine but I then decided I wanted to use WP locally on the server where this domain points. I therefore deleted the blog trusting the domain name would be released for redevelopment elsewhere. It seems this was a big mistake. No matter what I do now, addressing this domain in a browser always comes back with a screen saying: “This site has been deleted by the authors”. I tried using the WP.com account to address a different domain I also own, making this the primary blog, but that still doesn’t release the original domain from the clutches of WP.com. I’ve tried re-pointing the domain to my own webhosting servers – surely that should work? – but it’s made no difference. Can someone advise how to achieve this, I’m getting desperate.

I think that now you have deleted the site you will not be able to release the domain yourself as detailed in “Transfer a domain to another registrar“. I am not 100% sure as I have not done this myself, so give it a go and let us know if it works.

I think that you will need staff to release the domain associated with a deleted blog, so I’ll flag this thread for their attention. Please be patient as it can take staff a while to reach this thread

Thanks, but just to clarify, this is not a domain registered through WP.com, it’s one I’ve owned for the past 15 years, it’s my company domain, so the route you suggested does not apply?

If you own the domain and it is not hosted at WordPress.com and you are moving to a self-hosted blog then you are right this does not apply.

All you need to do is change the name servers fro the domain to point to the name servers for the hosting provider and not the WordPress name servers.

I’ve removed the flag for staff assistance as it does not look like a WordPress issue. Please let me know if you need anything else

tandava108, that’s exactly what I expected to happen, but the fact is manyagem.com points to ns11.whspn.net & ns15.whspn.net and hasn’t moved from there. I also have manyagem.co.uk and many-a-gem.co.uk forwarded to the same address. each of them resolves to them following page: blogs2014.wordpress.com is no longer available

Have you set the ‘A’ record back to point to your host?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah! – I think that’s where the problem is, thanks for the tip. The A records are pointing to a WP page that says: account suspended. I’m going to revert to default values at my registry then re-point to the webhosting servers. If you don’t hear back from me, let’s assume that works. Fingers crossed.

Well, two days on and I seem to be no nearer to solving this one. I have reset the A records and checked the DNS settings. If I type http://www.manyagem.com/index.html into a web browser, I’m taken to my domain index page at my web host correctly. If I leave off the /index.html and just type http://www.manyagem.com I’m taken to blogs2014.wordpress.com/many-a-gem which has a URL 66.155.11.238 where thousands of wp sites are listed with their links. Surely this needs removing?

This must be something you (or someone else) set up on the root URL. When accessing http://www.manyagem.com I get
    :

    -------
    Request URL:http://www.manyagem.com/
    Request Method:GET
    Status Code:301 Moved Permanently
    Location:http://wp.me/P4etIO-3
    --------
    Request URL:http://wp.me/P4etIO-3
    Request Method:GET
    Status Code:301 Moved Permanently
    Location:http://blogs2014.wordpress.com/many-a-gem/
    ---------
    Request URL:http://blogs2014.wordpress.com/many-a-gem/
    Request Method:GET
    Status Code:410 Gone
    (with content)
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" data-placeholder-focus="false"><head...

It is doing a double redirect from http://www.manyagem.com to wp.me/P4etIO-3 then to blogs2014.wordpress.com/many-a-gem/. I don’t think the issue is in WordPress!

Thanks for that. I think it’s helpful, though I’m sure I wouldn’t have wanted to permanently direct my domain name somewhere else, so it’s happened inadvertently. All my attempts to get it redirected from my registry and webhost have failed, so the issue now is how do I get it back?

I would check if there is any redirect set on your web host – that’s what it looks like. I think your web hosting provider can probably help more than WordPress.com now.
