Releasing my domain
-
Saturday, I purchased a domain “theblondechef.com” through WordPress.com and subsequently bought a custom template through a third party (unaware that WP.com does NOT allow users to upload templates). As the design I had chosen is an intrical part of my blog design I immediately cancelled my WP.com account so I could further research other hosts. However, being new at this, I also cancelled my domain without knowing that it would not automatically be available to register. I then decided to try Blue Host (with WP.org) and realized that I could still register my domain name as an existing domain. And did so. However, my domain is now “locked” and I am unable to transfer hosts. Is there anyway wordpress.com can release the domain? It was never “published” and I cancelled my account/domain purchase within 30 min of creating it.

It will take some time for the domain to return to the market, and there were several warnings about this during the cancel process.
At this particular point in the process, we have no control over what happens to the domain, and you’ll need to wait for it to become available again.

Let me begin by saying, thank you for responding to my inquiry. However, (staff-blorbo) I had NO warnings about the fact that I would not have access to my domain during the cancellation process. It was only until doing research AFTER the fact, that I learned there could potentially be a holding period. Especially, since my browser had multiple problems submitting the cancellation form. Second, I am still unclear as to why you have “no control over what happens to the domain”. As per my understanding, since I cancelled within a 5 day window, you (the domain registrar) should be able to re-release my domain without an issue.

The domain will indeed be released in a shorter time span when canceled within the 5-day window, it’s a process controlled by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The warnings come in the form of an “are you sure?” button when the domain is chosen to be canceled.
