Relocating content/theme to new server

  • Unknown's avatar

I used a theme to design a site which I thought would be the ultimate destination, i.e., expectation was my friend would reassign their existing url to this new wordpress.com site. Plan has changed, and they’d like to keep their current site and move the wordpress theme there to maintain email, etc. Questions:

    1. Is it possible to move content and theme from the WP.com site to a different server and keep the integrity of the site I designed, or have I lost that time and effort?

    2. If lost, do I need to re-design the site on wordpress.org instead, then move it (assuming the theme is available there)?

    3. Given #2, I’m anticipating hiring a web designer to help, since your directions to move sites from wordpress.org include setting up SQL databases, with which I’ve no experience. Is it possible to simply purchase the complete theme and set it up on the new server, without the intermediary step of setting it up first on wordpress.org?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Sean,

You’ll be able to move the content to a new WordPress.org site, but some of the WordPress.com themes are customized, and would be difficult to move over. (Though I would imagine that ultimately, WordPress.org would offer even more flexibility in customization.)

Addressing points #2 and #3: WordPress.org isn’t a hosted site service like WordPress.com is. You’ll have to install the WordPress.org software on your server, so there’s no moving around apart from moving your content out of WordPress.com.

The WordPress.com Staff offer a service called Guided Transfer, where they’ll help set up a WordPress.org installation onto one of their recommended hosts for you, and transfer your content. Here’s a support article that explains more about it:

Please feel free to post back if you have any further questions regarding this!
