Remove all widgets and stay that way
-
I am trying to remove all of my widgets but when I do there are default ones that show up. Is there a way to make those ones go away as well? Any help would be appreciated. All I want visible are my posts.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

My blog is set to where I don’t think people can view it without my adding them. It does not seem necessary for it to be seen to know my problem. All I want is to get rid of any and all widgets without it reverting to using default ones. My theme is Benevolence.

We cannot give you appropriate answers without confirming that you are hosted here. Fully a third of questions come from people hosted elsewhere.
IF you are hosted here, all you have to do is put a widget in your sidebar, save changes, then take it out again and save those changes. Providing, of course, you’ve chosen a widget-enabled theme. Some have the stuff in the sidebar coded right in, and in that case you’d have to change themes.

I’d really like to remove the blogroll, category and comments from my site. Mostly the blogroll since it is not needed. I’ve tried a few different themes and tried to remove to no avail. It says ‘0’ widgets so I’m thinking it must be part of the theme. I like the white look for my portfolio. Anyway I can mostly take out the blogroll and also if possible, categories and comments? Here’s my site http://mariecoppolaro.wordpress.com/

Themes come with a set of default widgets. If you just add another widget like a blank text widget. The the default set will either go away or you can remove the widgets you don’t like.

Many thanks for that, that worked perfectly, I no longer have a blogroll. Is there any way of deleting the comments box altogether?
-
Yes. I think it’s Settings > Discussion > Default article settings > untick “Allow people to post comments on the article “
I think it’s so? -
-
Click to edit the post or page. Scroll down. There’s Discussion too. Untick “Allow comments on this post”.
-
I’ve unticked ‘allow comments on this post’ on discussions. On each page it still posts ‘without comments’ under my page heading and has the comment box at the bottom of the post. I’ve seen wordpress blogs without comments so is it a theme thing? I really like the white look, it’s just the comments I’d like to get rid of.

I switched my test blog to The Journalist theme, and notice that yours looks different from mine. Have you been using CSS to modify your blog?
With discussion unchecked in the PAGE editor, the comment box is gone. On POSTS, it says “comments off” at the bottom of the post.
-
@deep7peace: To get rid of the comments box, you need to deactivate the “Allow Comments” option in the page editor screen (as sylwiaofwarsaw suggested above).
@Tess: There are two Journalist themes.

panos,
FLAX!! You are right. Thanx.
I have an aversion to being organized alphabetically by “THE whatever…”
The non-profit where I work starts with “The” and the most popular phonebook lists us that way, though we spent years to make them change it. I hear customers and donors who say we are not listed in the phonebook… I’m too annoyed and too academic and old fashioned.semi quote “you need to deactivate the “Allow Comments” option in the page editor screen (as sylwiaofwarsaw suggested above).” FOR EACH PAGE

Is there a way that I can add a widget to my sidebar, and make it pop up ontop without removing the other widgets?

deep7peace,
It’s nice that you let us (volunteers) know that your question was successfully answered. Though I was the least helpful, you know, everyone appreciates a thank-you.
