remove an accepted viewer

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I have several viewers who have accepted invitations to my private site but I would like to remove them. I cannot find a ‘remove user’ option as described in the help article.
How do I remove viewers who have accepted invitations and thereby revoke all access to my site for them?
    Thank you.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for reaching out – please see this guide on how to remove a user/follower from the site: https://wordpress.com/support/followers/#how-to-remove-a-follower

    I hope this helps.

    Hello,

I am able to remove followers, I am not able to remove viewers. It ays there is a remove viewer button, but I do not see it anywhere. All I can do is “clear” the list but “these people will still have access to your site”.

I want to remove their access.

    “Viewer

Viewers apply only to sites that are set to private. Viewers are users who can only view private sites. Like Followers, Viewers do not have any editing privileges. All they can do is simply read the private site they were invited to and leave comments on it (only if you have enabled comments).

If someone is a Follower of your public site, and then you set that site to private, they do not automatically become a Viewer.

Viewers must always be specifically invited. Viewers must also sign up with a WordPress.com account to follow a private site if they would like to receive updates each time you publish a new post.”

Is there a way to do this? I do not want to have to remove my site and start over.

To delete a viewer, click the Remove User button. That user will no longer be able to see your private site.

It looks like you’re looking at the Invites section, not your Viewers. In your Viewers tab, there aren’t any current Viewers on your site. Invites will still show on the Invites page even if the Viewer chose to stop following your site.

Since your Viewers tab is empty, there aren’t any Viewers to remove. You can also clear out those accepted invites.

    I hope that clarifies things!

Thank you, yes it does. What does it mean that even if I clear the invites list they will still be a part of the site? For example, when I click on an invite record it says this:

“If you no longer wish to see this record, you can clear it. The person will still remain a member of this site.”

Do they need approval again before being able to view/follow the site?

    Thank you.

  • Sorry for the confusion on that.

It means that removing the “accepted invite” will not automatically remove users for you.

If they are not a user on the site anymore (whether they stopped viewing or whether you removed them) then you can ignore that warning and just go ahead and remove them from the list, as you’d like. Or, you can keep the list there in case you want to add them to your site again at some point and need to remember the usernames.

    I hope this helps!
