I did not remember whether I had used Google account to log in to WP, so tried to log in with it. Result: Without asking, WP created a new WP account linked to my Google account.

I want to use my Google account to log in to my old, existing WP account.

Based on help docs, I’ve tried changing username, email, name, setting password. Still, when I click ‘Disconnect’ under Security > Linked Accounts > Google, the button just briefly changes to ‘Connect’, then back to ‘Disconnect’. In short: it doesn’t seem to be working.

How do I undo this new account, so I can link my Google account to the old WP account?

As a feedback: I know your name is Automattic, but automattic creation of an undeletable account is not the epitome of a perfect UX.

    Hi –

What is the username that you are trying to access?

Hi, problem is not access. I can access both my old, proper account, and the new account WP created automatically from my Google login.

The problem is I want to get rid of this new account, unlink my Google credentials from the new account, and use the Google login for the old account.

Ok. Once you change the email address on the unwanted account you’ll be able to use that same email address on the desired account. It’s not possible to have the same email on multiple accounts as each requires a unique address.

These are the instructions to deactivate the unwanted account: https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

If you look carefully at my original post, I wrote:

The link you posted is the “help docs” I was referring to.

Reusing an email address is neither the problem.

The problem is I want to unlink my Google credentials from the new account, and use the Google login for the old account. As stated in the original post, the button to do that doesn’t work.

    Hi –

Sign in to the account that you want connected to Google and then go to https://wordpress.com/me/security/social-login to reconnect it. Let me know if it does not work.

    It does not work.

This is because the Google account is connected to the new, unnecessary extra account, and the same Google account cannot be connected to two WP accounts.

In my original post I wrote about the problem I have disconnecting the Google account from the new WP account:

…when I click ‘Disconnect’ under Security > [Social Login] > Google, the button just briefly changes to ‘Connect’, then back to ‘Disconnect’. In short: it doesn’t seem to be working.

So, once again: The problem is I want to unlink my Google credentials from the new account, so I can use the Google login for the old account.

    Good morning –

I think there’s a caching issue happening on your end since I am able to disconnect the Google Account behind the scenes.

    Please try the following:

    1. Log out of this account.
    2. Clear your browser cache and cookies.
    3. Log in to the other account using username and password.
    4. Update the email of the account to your Gmail address.
    5. Now, try to connect your Google account under security settings.

Thank you for disconnecting the Google Account behind the scenes.

I was now able to connect my Google Account to my old WP account.

    Thanks!
