  How do I remove the black background on my slideshow on my first page?

  scroll down to “Background color” and select “White”

  I have done this, changed background colour to white, and yet the slideshow still has a black background. I am on http://londondiaryblog.wordpress.com

  That setting is for the gallery carousel slideshow, not the standard slideshow.
  To really remove the bg you need the Custom Design upgrade.
  But I have invented a workaround for users who don’t have the upgrade:
