Remove date and word 'uncatagorized' from Home page

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using Typo … I have only used it once but it feels like it has changed since I first created my first blog/website (whichever it is called) … I do not want the date showing nor the word ‘uncatagorized’ showing. Can you help me please? I haven’t been able to understand answers given to similar questions … I am rather a computer idiot so a step-by-step guide is the ‘order of the day’ ….

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It is not poppyladymadameguerin.wordpress.com that I need help with – that last sentence was added without my knowledge. It is a second blog I am trying to create … which I have not made public yet …. thanks

What is the URL of the site, please? It’s not possible to help you with the site if we don’t know what it is.

That said, the only way to hide elements like the date or categories from showing on the page is by using CSS, and you can only use CSS if you have the Premium Plan on your site.

We have a CSS forum where you can get the CSS code needed to make these changes, but without the Premium Plan you won’t be able to add that code anywhere.

Would I have to make it public? or, as a Happiness Engineer, could you look without me having to do that? I did not have this problem with the Typo theme last year :-( Heather

  • I can see your private site. I just need the URL to know what site I need to help with.

If the problem is the dates and categories being visible, that’s how the theme is designed, and most themes on WordPress.com show that. This is not something that has been changed recently on the Typo theme – you can see both showing on the demo page for that theme as well:
    https://typodemo.wordpress.com/

But I’m happy to take a closer look if you can provide the URL.

I warned that I was an idiot … how do I obtain the URL please?

Is it this: https://greatwarhomehospitals.wordpress.com/2016/06/19/ ? It is the Home page that has the date and “uncategorized” word on … Thanks

  • Okay, the date right at the top is because that link is the archive page for all posts published on that day. The home page at https://greatwarhomehospitals.wordpress.com/ does not show that date.

The date showing below the post title is part of the theme. The only way to remove that is via CSS as I explained before. The same applies to the category.

But I think I see the problem now.

The reason you don’t see that on your http://poppyladymadameguerin.wordpress.com/ site is because you’re using pages on that site, not posts. Pages don’t show a publication date and they don’t have categories. Is the new site also intended to be a book like your other site? In that case, you can again use pages.

To create a new page, click on My Sites ->Pages ->Add New. The page titles will automatically be added to your menu.

To set a Home page like you have on your other site, first create the page, and then follow the instructions here to set it as your home page:
Set a Static “Home” Page (Front Page)

Hi… yes, I shall use it in the exactly the same way as poppylady …. and I am fine with adding news pages …. thanks for your help. Keep your fingers crossed that I don’t need to come back :-) Best Regards Heather

I am back :-( I haven’t been able to navigate to find the “Static Page” option. I have published a new page entitled “Home” but it is private, does that make a difference? Do I have to go “Public” before I get a drop down with that option please?

Have you done away with online chats for users like myself? I cannot move on … sorry ….. :-(

  • Hello Heather,

You won’t be able to set a private page as the front page. Your site is set to private, so you don’t need to set your individual pages to private as well. Publish your pages as public – they will still be hidden as the entire site is currently hidden.

At the moment we’re only able to offer live chat to users with upgrades, but I’m happy to keep helping you here in the forums. We’re not in the same time zone, so my replies might sometimes take a while, but I’ll stick with you until you’re happy with your site :)

kokkieh, I have been out until now, sorry … delay in replying is not due to rudeness. I feel a fraud here as I had no trouble with creating my first Typo site … so I am perplexed as to why I cannot get my head around it this time. So I will go and make at least my new page entitled ‘Home’ “public”. Out of interest, how does a site become public then? …. I thought it became public as soon as the pages were public …. I cannot recall making a deliberated action to make the other site public … I just published each page ….

Don’t faint :-) but I think I may have achieved what I was trying to do … thank you. Perhaps you could just clarify the issue about “how does a site become public then? …. I thought the site became public as soon as a page was published …. I cannot recall making a deliberated action to make the other site public … I just published each page ….”

  • Out of interest, how does a site become public then? …. I thought it became public as soon as the pages were public

You can set a site to public at My Sites ->Settings. There is a section labeled Privacy where you can set a site between private, public but hidden from search engines, or completely public. Once you are ready, head to that page and change the privacy setting, and anyone will be able to find your site.
