Remove Domain Mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

I need to remove domain mapping for twowheeltravelblog.wordpress.com which is mapped to twowheeltravelblog.com

I have set up a 301 redirect and moved to a new registrar. I don’t need a refund or anything. I just want to cancel the mapping.
    How do I accomplish that?
    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey Tyler,

I’ve removed it for you. Our system didn’t receive the notification of the registrar transfer, but I was able to manually confirm the transfer.

If you need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!

    Thanks kraftbj,
Funny the request didn’t show. Either way, it’s showing in my DreamHost dashboard.

I’m hoping this helps me gain control of some issues I have RE: losing back links since I moved to a self hosted install back in June. I naively thought mapping was the same as 301 and all my hard earned back links have dried up.

  • Yikes :-/ For anyone linking to your domain name, it should have still taken folks to your non-WP.com site. The backlinks might have dried up if the permalink structure didn’t match (e.g. on WordPress.com, if it was http://yourdomain.com/2013/10/16/example-post and on your new site it was http://yourdomain.com/example-post ), that could be a cause.

Sorry to hear about the links :-(

Actually I was carefully to match the petprmalink convention between the two sites to avoid just this sort of problem.
Right now I’ve lost about 400 links and I’m down to only 4. All from WP.com.
    Argh!

  • How are you checking for backlinks? I’m happy to dig in over here to see if there is anything on our end that could help.

I’ve been using Google webmaster mainly. Although I’ve tried a few other tools recently to see if perhaps big G was hiccuping.

I’d welcome any help you could offer. Do you need anything on my end to do that?

    Thanks!

  • Could you upload a screenshot of what you’re seeing in GWT? You can upload it to the media manager of your old WP.com site via http://twowheeltravelblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

    Thanks!

    Done.

  • Thanks Tyler.

With the permalinks still lining up, I’m not seeing anything that would have negatively impacted it on my end. I did note that your sitemap ( http://www.twowheeltravelblog.com/sitemap.xml.gz ), linked from http://www.twowheeltravelblog.com/robots.txt, is returning an error.

Since the site is off WordPress.com now, there’s not much I can do to help figure out what’s going on there, but that isn’t a good thing!

Google’s methods for determining links may be an issue too. I noticed that your new site uses “www” in the domain while the site with WordPress.com did not. You may still have all of your backlinks, but since they’re likely pointing to addresses without the www, Google is seeing them as pointing to a different site (if that made sense).

It has been awhile since I’ve done this myself, but GWT should have an option where you can inform them of a domain change. Indicating that “twowheeltravelblog.com” is now “www.twowheeltravelblog.com” may do the trick.
