remove "email subscription" box from blog page
-
How can I remove the “Email Subscription” box from my blog page sidebar (http://friendsofmichiganmidwives.org/archives/)? In fact, I’d like to not have a “Pages” box there either, since all the other pages on my site do not have sidebars.
How can you change settings for the blog page to match the rest? Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can remove the sidebar entirely by navigating to this page:
https://friendsofmichiganmidwives.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=193&action=edit
Then, on the right-hand side of the page, choose “Full-width Page” from the Page Template drop-down as shown here:
Can you give that a try?
-
I had already tried that with no success, but I tried it again just now – still no change.

It looks like the Motif theme automatically returns the sidebar page template if a page is set as the Posts Page under your Reading Settings here:
https://friendsofmichiganmidwives.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
Since Archives is set as the posts page, it will automatically return the sidebar. I’m sorry for not noticing this sooner!
There are three main options:
1. We can put widgets in there that you want to display.
2. We can use CSS to remove the widget area. This would require the Premium bundle shown here:
3. We can look for another theme that doesn’t force the sidebar layout. I’m happy to help you do that!
Let me know how you would like to proceed.

I’m grateful for the three options, but we like the current theme and don’t want to mess with css, esp. when it involves an added cost. If we have to have a sidebar, is there any way to replace the Meta widget with a different one? Maybe a Tag Cloud? Thanks!

Yep! You can add widgets to the main sidebar here:
https://friendsofmichiganmidwives.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php
More on adding widgets here:
Can you try adding a few widgets (Tag Cloud might be one you’re looking for)?

The Main Sidebar was empty, but I added the Tag Cloud widget. I saved and reloaded the blog page (“Archives”), but no change. (I have a screenshot of the expanded Main Sidebar, but I don’t see how to upload it here.)
It seems to me that if the Archives and Meta widgets are hardcoded into the Main Sidebar for pages with blog functions in Motif, they wouldn’t be alterable anyway by adding widgets – but I’m just guessing, of course. -
HI!
It looks like there is a visibility restriction on the widget as shown here:
Can you open the visibility settings for that widget and remove the restriction using the “Delete” link on the right-hand side? That should do the trick?
More on widget visibility here:
-
I put that visibility restriction on because I wanted the tag cloud ONLY on the “Archives” (blog) page. But I removed it, as per your directions. No change. It didn’t add the tag cloud to other pages, probably because I had specified them as full-width. I removed the full-width specification to the Archives page. No change.
I think I’m going to leave it here. There clearly is no way to remove the widgets on the blog page, short of changing the code. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
When I remove the visibility settings, the widget pops up as shown here:
Can you make sure you’re clicking “Delete” and then saving the widget as shown here?
I promise you don’t have to change the theme code to switch out those widgets!
-
Alternatively, you could switch out the “Archive” in the restriction for “Posts Page” like this:
That should work as well for the page titled “Archive.”
-
Jeremy, I don’t know what you did, but the “Archives” page looks exactly as it should! I see the change you’ve made for the Posts Page. Thank you very much for persisting – I’m so grateful.
