Remove Featured Content from Gateway Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, I have a wordpress site and I want it to be a basis webpage rather than a blog. However, I can’t find any option to completely remove the “featured content” from the homepage (I have it set to static page). As there are no blog posts, it just says “Nothing found” and shows a search box where the featured content would be. I have no need for a premium account at the present time, so please don’t just tell me to upgrade. I don’t feel I should have to pay just to remove one box from my homepage. I am using the Gateway Theme.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @authormaphipps,

    If you’ve purchased the custom CSS patch you can try this code out:

    .featured-posts {
    display: none;
    }

    Otherwise I’m sure whether you can disable that feature or not. I just tried the same theme on my blog and it looks like the Featured Post thing doesn’t appear if I set as static homepage any pages which are not the blog page. Maybe it’s just a coincidence but it’s worth double checking.

    Let me know how it goes :)

    Is the custom CSS patch the same as upgrading to a Premium account?

    The page I have set as my static homepage is not the blog page—just a homepage I made. I even tried setting the “posts” pages to anything else but nothing gets rid of the Featured post area. It just ends up saying “Nothing Found” with a search bar =/ I would buy the Premium account to sort it if I had need of it but at the present moment in time, it’s just an expense that doesn’t make sense for me since I still have so much available in terms of content on the free account. I don’t even necessarily want to get rid of the featured content area, I just want to hide it so it isn’t visible.

    hi! please let me know if you find a solution to this – i’m having the exact same problem (don’t want blog posts showing in ‘featured content’ area of homepage which i’ve set as static). And yet, i’m also getting ‘nothing found’ with the search box. Any follow ups would be much appreciated! Thanks :)

    AH I’VE FIGURED IT OUT! If the post you want as your homepage—go to that page and make the template the full-width instead of “Homepage.” Having that page set to “Homepage” layout is what is causing the issue!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh but now the homepage—the top bit isn’t bigger anymore. This is so frustrating.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ohhh boo :( yeah its very frustrating trying to figure out how it works! and i don’t want to have to pay to enable CSS editing (i don’t even know how to work that anyways). There MUST be a way though, somehow?!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m the same! I have zero understanding of code (hence whey I’m on wordpress.com and not .org). And I really don’t have any need for the premium upgrade at the current time so it would just be a waste of money. I just hate how the themes seem to force you to have a blog section =( You should be able to hide anything you don’t want to use!

    Will it work to do what you said – but then reload the header image onto the page? I’m gonna try that now..

  • Unknown's avatar

    You can definitely change the template for the page you want as the homepage, but you won’t have the bigger header anymore. The homepage will just use the template of whatever you have set for the static front page which is incredibly frustrating.

  • Unknown's avatar

    :( yeah i want the header image to be nice and big on the home page

    one thing i’m trying, is to do a post – but just have it be a horizontal line. then the search bar etc. disappears, but there’s still a date showing up – not sure if there’s an option to have blog posts appear without the date. if so that might be one solution, although it does leave an awkward bit of blank space at the bottom of the homepage.

    I tried that =( And I checked. You need code to do that too. GARRRR.

  • @authormaphipps – As far as I understood there’s not too much to do on that if you don’t upgrade to the Premium and get the CSS patch.
    I’m a writer as well so I hear you ;)

    If I can express a personal opinion, what I would is:
    – trying to fill the Featured Content area with something that could attract the readers’ eyes. I know it’s a bit forced and clashes with the layout idea you had in mind, but maybe it’s worth a try.
    – browsing the store for another theme that can fancy you. Here you can find 192 free themes. I know that the Gateway Theme is really ace, however I’m sure there’s something cool around that can grab your attention.

    @wildpostcardproject as for hiding the date etc, you can sort that out with a bit of CSS love as well, but again, you need to purchase the CSS customiser.

    Hey @stefanieamattana, yeah I’m trying to just fill it with something that may work well there now. Unfortunately, all of the other free themes have the same featured content area so I think I’m stuck with it no matter what unless I upgrade =(

  • @authormaphipps Guh, I’m sorry to hear you’re stuck!

    Give it a go to the featured content, as a writer I’m sure something will come up very soon and it would be brilliant :)

    Stay tuned also on the themes page: every now and then new themes are added, and some of them are cheaper to purchase than getting the Premium. I mean, it’s totally up to you in case you decide to invest some money on the upgrades. I got the theme for my blog for $40 two years ago and it still works like a charm ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks @stefaniamattana, that’s an idea too. I’ll keep an eye out!

  • Good luck with that then and best wishes with your books ;)

    Okay so we can’t get rid of that, is it possible to have a full-width bit of featured content? i mean, instead of the three different posts, to have just one that is the whole width of the page? That might look okay…

    Thanks :) and @authormaphipps glad to see you’re working out something that you’ll be happy with

  • Hi there,

    I’m afraid that would be doable again with a bit of CSS love, and again we’re back to square one with the purchasing option.

    There might be some theme which could maybe feature a single full-width entry as a Feature Content, so I’d suggest you to browse the list of themes I linked above to see if there’s something similar around :)
