Remove "follow" button in action bar
-
Friends, even though I deactivated it some time ago, the “follow” button for visitors NOT logged in shows up again in the lower right corner of my blog (Baskerville theme).
I can’t find the setting to deactivate it anymore (there used to be a checkbox in dashboard -> settings -> reading).
What happened? How can the button be removed again?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey baskervillefan!
It looks like the removal option has been taken away. If you have the premium edition of wordpress.com, you can edit the template CSS code with the following:
#actionbar {
display: none;

@wordpress: was the removal of the checkbox by mistake (perhaps unplanned effect of a CSS update)? If so, could you please add the checkbox again? :) It used to be under dashboard -> settings -> reading -> hide follow-button for logged-out visitors. This would be fantastic.
@nicholasmiranda: thanks, but I have no premium plan…

Hi there,
That option was removed some time ago, along with the old logged out follow button, when the new action bar was implemented. Now the action bar will show to any visitor to your site if you have posts published, and is hidden automatically for sites that only have pages, not posts.
The only way to completely hide the action bar is via CSS, but that will likely hide it for both logged in and logged out visitors, as I don’t see different CSS classes for the action bar when I view it logged out vs logged in.

There are no plans, no, but I’d like to hear your reasons why you don’t want it visible. I can then relay your feedback to the product teams who make the decisions about this.

Well I find it somewhat intrusive, as it pops up everytime you scroll upwards, which you have to do quite often with non-linear masonry themes like Baskerville. That’s why I included the follow option in the footer.
Yeah would be great if your product team could simply re-insert the checkbox in the settings page. After all, why remove a simple and nice option people got used to…? :)

Plus it always shows the number of followers. In the footer plugin, I can select to show or not show the total number of followers (I prefer the latter).
So ideally, your product team could add both options: 1) hide the number of followers and 2) remove the button altogether (while leaving the … action bar there).
Many thanks anyway.

Hi baskervillefan,
Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback, I’ll pass on your thoughts.

I agree with baskervillefan. On one of my sites, I am trying to get people to sign up for Mailchimp and I don’t want to encourage following blog for that reason.
-
One more reason: kokkieh wrote the button is only shown on sites with posts, but hidden on sites that only have pages. However, some sites, especially with masonry themes, use posts as if it’s a static page. In such cases you also would like to hide the follow button because there won’t be any updates, so people would “follow” in vain and get frustrated.
So please WordPress magicians, give us back that little checkbox to hide the follow button and make everybody happy :-)

I’m using a theme with blogs on the front page. The follow button looks really unprofessional and I would like to see it removed. It seems like a bit of a scam to make me pay for business plan just to get rid of it.
