Remove Gutenberg on free site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I am struggling with free site and Gutenberg.

Is there anyway to disable Gutenberg on a free WordPress .com website so I can use a basic theme and easily edit the site? I know I can’t install plugins on a free plan.

    Thank you.

  • Hi there,

The block editor is the default and only editor included in the open source WordPress software made on WordPress.org. We use that software on WordPress.com as well, so there is no way to remove the block editor.

On WordPress.com, for now, you still have the option to use the classic editor by going to https://pound4poundireland.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ and clicking on Posts there, but that will not exist indefinitely – that editor is based on the classic editor plugin which is pre-installed on all WordPress.com sites, but support for that plugin will eventually stop, at which point it will also be removed from WordPress.com.

In other words, the block editor is here to stay, and will soon be the only editor available. It is also the only editor that can be used on our newer themes, that have been created specifically for the block editor.

If you prefer the feel of the classic editor instead, we recommend you use the classic block:

    Classic Block
