Remove links from primary nav but keep in footer

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I have a series of navigation items that appear in the main nav that also appear in the footer. I need to remove two of those links so they only appear in the footer. These are “Links” and “Contact”.

I created a widget for the footer menu as a way of trying to separate those items from the main nav, but they are still in there. If I go into the Primary menu under Appearance, they aren’t in it but are still visible on the front end.

    What am I doing wrong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey,

If you have not created a menu from Appearance > Menus, then the newly created page URL will be automatically assigned in the menu area.

First, create a menu by going to Appearance > Menus. Then, assign it to the Primary/Main menu. After that, you can use a widget to assign the same menu to the footer. This will give you full control over managing the menu items.

    Thank you

I checked your site and what you want to do is to simply remove the menu items from the Primary menu.

Thanks @dragstor. The weird thing is there are items in that nav that aren’t in Primary Menu – Appearance, so I cannot remove something that isn’t there, even though it’s showing on the front end? For example, the links “Index to Archive” and “Links” appear in the main nav that are only set to the Footer nav?? The “Contact” link appears in both so I can remove that one fine, but what about the other two?? Essentially, why do these two show in the main nav when I’ve set them to be in the Footer?? (See below):

Thanks @faisalahammad This sounds like a good option. It looks like I’m going to have to clean up up the Primary nav, adding the links that should be there and removing the ones that shouldn’t. The “Links” and “Index to Archive” are only part of the Footer nav, so they must be being added to the main nav automatically when a page is created, which is why they are not in any predefined nav.

  • Hey there,

It looks like you do not have a primary menu designated. If there is not a menu marked as primary, WordPress will display your site pages automatically. You can set an existing menu as primary from your menu settings by selecting Primary under Menu Settings:

Once selected you have saved the menu, you will see the menu on your site and you can manage your menu from the menu settings page.

    Hope this helps!

Hi @staff-dragon Thanks for the nudge, this has worked. I can now manage the nav much better. Thanks.

  • You are very welcome! Glad to hear this worked. 😄
