Remove myself as admin from a different owner’s site

    Hello, I helped someone set up their free wordpress.com blog probably over a decade ago. I’ve recently logged into my wordpress.com dashboard and noticed I am still listed as an admin on their site.

    I’ve followed all of the support instructions about first transferring the site ownership over to another admin first, yet when I go to ‘Site Tools’ the only options I see are to ‘change site address, reset your site, and delete your site permanently’. There is no option to transfer ownership of the site to the other admin which leads me to believe they must be the site’s owner?

    There are only two users listed on their site’s ‘Users’ page, myself and the other person. When I click on myself I see no option to remove myself or change my permissions. The only options is to mark myself as a ‘contractor, freelancer, consultant, or agency.’ When I click on their name I see a section called ‘Delete’ and the message ‘You cannot delete the site owner. Please transfer ownership of this site to a different account before deleting this user.’

    I have a hunch that since I helped them set up this site probably over decade or so ago that admin permissions have evolved in the database somewhere along the line, not allowing me to remove myself from a site that I am an admin of but not the site owner on.

    Please advise on how I can remove myself from their site? Thanks!

    Following up on my request since I am not the site owner and yet I cannot remove myself as an admin from the site.

    You can’t remove yourself as an admin, only the site owner can do so.

    If you go to the older Global Dashboard at https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs do you see the site there?

    If so, when you hover your mouse over the site address, do you see the option to “Leave Blog”? That option will only appear if you are not the site owner. Clicking it will start the process of removing you from that site.

    If you don’t see that option, you’re still listed as the site owner and would need to transfer ownership first to the other Admin on the site.

    Thank you @justjennifer, that was exactly the link that all the help articles I dug through didn’t link directly to. Since I was an admin but not site owner I was indeed able to hover over and select “Leave Blog”. Thank you!
