Remove PDFs
-
Hello,
I have deleted the PDFs files from library more than a week ago but I can still download them and I need to remove them urgently.
Furthermore, I have used Google Webmaster Tools and Google have unindexed the websites so the content doesn’t exist anymore but when I click on the links I can download the files.
I have cleared the cache from my browser and I have used several computers so I think it’s a problem with WordPress.com’s servers. How many days do I have to wait for the PDFs removal? Could you give me any solution?
Thank you so much in advance.

Hi dexek35,
I have deleted the PDFs files from library more than a week ago but I can still download them and I need to remove them urgently.
There are no PDF files in your Media Library so they have been removed from your WordPress.com site. This means we are no serving copies of those files from our servers.
PDFs appearing in search results are copies that have been indexed by Google — we don’t have any control over these files. You can make a request for Google to remove them from search results using the Remove Outdated Content tool:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals
You will need to add the URL copied from Google search results.
If you’ve already done this and the files are still there, Google may need some time to look at your request.
I hope this helps!

Thank you gemmacevans but you cannot see files in my Media Library because the PDFs are in another blog that I have.
I prefer not to write the links here because it’s confidential but I can write a draft in my blog with the links for the staff if it’s necessary. -
Hi dexek35,

Oh I see. What is the URL of the site where you have uploaded the PDFs? If you let me know I can take a look at your Media Library. Feel free to create a draft post if you would like to share individual links :)
Thanks!

Thank you for your quick reply gemmacevans. I have just created a draft post with the links in a document.
I would appreciate your help if you could delete the files from WordPress’ servers because as you can see files don’t exist anymore in the Media Library’s website.
It’s important to know that once it appeared the 404 error immediately after the files were deleted but then the 404 error has not reappeared. -
Hi dexek35,

Thanks for creating the draft post. Both of those files have been deleted from your Media Library — once a file is deleted from there it is no longer available. I see the following message when I visit each URL:
404 — File not found.
If you are still seeing the PDFs, please try clearing your browser cache using these steps:
Once you’ve done that, refresh the page and try visiting the URL again.
Let me know how you get on.

Thank you gemmacevans but why I don’t see the 404 error? I saw the 404 error once at the beginning when the files were deleted but not now. I have cleared my browser cache many times and I have used several browsers and devices. Are the files deleted from the servers?

Hi dexek35,
Can you login to the account you use for the other site and take a screenshot of what you are seeing?:
Please include as much of the browser window as you can and uploaded the screenshot to your Media Library so I can take a look.
Just reply here from the other account and let me know you’ve done so.
Thanks!

A screenshot of what you see when you visit one of the file URLs would be great. Thanks!

I have just uploaded screenshots of the URLs and Google Removal Tool because I think it could be helpful.
Thank you!

Thanks for doing that. The files are no longer on our servers and the fact that I can’t see them (but you can) suggests they are being cached either on your browser or network. If I was also able to see the files, that would indicate they are being served by WordPress.com.
I can see you’ve added URLs to the actual files rather than a URL copied from Google’s search results. If you don’t enter the correct URL, Google may not be able to process your removal request.

Thank you, gemmacevans.
They are not cached on my browser but if they are being cached on my network, how could I fix it? Will it be fixed automatically?
I have seen many cases like this in this forum and all have been solved but I don’t know how.
Could it be a problem with Google? Maybe when Google refreshes his cache the problem will be solved? But Google deleted the URLs from his search results (you can see this in another draft post in my blog.) -
Hi dexek35,
There isn’t anything else we are able to do from our side now and as you say, Google have deleted the URLs and may be in the process of clearing their cache. Your ISP could have also cached a copy of the files, so you could speak to them about it if you continue to have problems.
-
Thank you so much! I don’t know what is the problem so I’ll wait (I’ve been waiting for almost 15 days.) Maybe the files are duplicated and I didn’t realise? But you couldn’t see the 404 error so I don’t think so.
I’ve read that WordPress has many servers around the world, could the files be cached in one of them?
Sorry for so many questions but this situation is very frustrating. -

I had checked for copies of the files but rest assured, they had been deleted and none were found. I’m still seeing an error 404 when I visit the URLs :)

If there are no copies on servers, I will wait until It is solved.
Will it be solved automatically, right?
Thank you so much for your help, gemmacevans. -
