I want to keep my wordpress.com domain name as mentioned in the subject line. I would like to delete the purchased domain name I have been using instead – and I would like to blog on a different topic area other than the one I have since 2009. Thanks folks. Gary

You can remove a domain from your current blog by
Control Panel =>Domains=>Delete
This will restore your original blog name. After doing this you can map the domain to a different blog, but you do need to pay another domain mapping fee. All of this can be done without staff intervention.

If it were me and I didn’t have a deadline for mapping the domain on the new blog I would run the existing blog for a while with the mapped domain as a secondary URL.
Control Panel =>Domains=> then select the “primary” option for garyshunk.wordpress.com . This means that people following links and search engine results for the mapped domain will be forwarded to the garyshunk.wordpress.com pages. After a while the new pages will be picked up by search engines, then I would map the domain to the news site. Of course if you want existing links and searches to end up on your new blog then just map straight away.
