Remove redirect
-
Hi there,
I am designing a new site for a client jenstebbing.com
She has a hosting package in place with fasthosts.co.uk
I would like to remove the redirect on jebstebbing.com that is currently going to jenstebbing.wordpress.com
Apparently fasthosts cannot change the A record to their server
Can you please advise how I do this?I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

Hi there,
jenstebbing.com is currently pointed to WordPress.com via its name servers.
If you want to use the domain with another hosting provider, you need to change its name servers to the hosting provider you want to use, and then set the appropriate A record in you DNS at that hosting provider.
Changing the name servers can only be done at the domain registrar where the domain is registered, and that appears to be Fasthosts, so I’m not sure why they didn’t suggest this themselves :)
As we currently manage the DNS for the domain you can also achieve the same end result by adding an A record on our end, but that can only be done by the WordPress.com account that owns the domain connection upgrade for the domain. But if they won’t be hosting the domain with us going forward, continuing to pay us for a paid plan and domain connection upgrade just to manage the DNS from our end doesn’t make a lot of sense.
So ultimately changing the name servers to your new host is best. Then your client can also cancel the upgrades they own with us so they don’t continue paying us for a service they no longer use.
Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Thanks so much for the quick reply :)
I asked them if we couldn’t simply changes the name servers through their CPanel, but they seemed to think that this is not possible??
Appreciate all the help!

Your domain is registered with Fasthosts, so make sure you’re making that change through them: https://help.fasthosts.co.uk/app/answers/detail/a_id/15/~/changing-a-domains-nameservers

Thanks much :)
Nameservers have been changed and all seems to be working fine.
However:
The links for the wordpress hosted site are still showing up in the Google search results. Obviously when you click on them they are pointing to the new site where those pages no longer exist.
Is there a way to remove these links from the old site?
Many thanks

That’s something that will have to be updated on Google’s end.
This should happen automatically over the next few weeks as Google gradually updates their index for the domain.
You can also verify the site in Google Search Console, upload a current sitemap for the site, and request reindexing from there. That should help speed up the process.
If you’re perhaps using a SEO plugin, like Yoast SEO on the new site, I suggest you contact their support directly to ask if there’s anything else you can do. If you’re not using a SEO plugin, consider doing that. Yoast is by far the most popular option for self-hosted WordPress sites, and will give you a lot of control over how search engines display results for your site.
Just a last thought: please remind your client to cancel the domain mapping upgrade and plan they still have with us under their own WordPress.com account. As they’re no longer using that domain for us, there’s no reason for them to continue paying us for those upgrades :)
