Remove the following redirect chain if possible
-
I have posted before on page load times and slow page loads on a live site compared to a similar test site.
I still haven’t been able to work out a satisfactory answer, but I am learning all the time. So here’s my latest information and a request for help please.
In summary, I have a live site and a set up a test site to test out changes. On most speed test sites, the two home pages, which are vary similar, give very different scores. For example:
Google page speed insights: Live site: 25-40. Test site: 60-85.
Pingdom: Live site: 65-75. Test site: 80-85.
GTMetrix: Live site: F, E, 8-12 secs. Test site: B, B, 2 secs.I have received various suggestions on the reasons for these differences, and how to fix things, but none seem to solve the problem.
But now I think I have discovered the problem – though not the solution.
The GTMetrix test identifies about 100 “redirect chains” that slow the loading of the live site, but don’t seem to occur on the test site. When I click on the redirect URLs’ they all seem to be 1x1px GIFs, which doesn’t make any sense to me at all. GTMetrix advises “Remove the following redirect chain if possible”.
I certainly don’t want 100 unnecessary redirects!
When I searched for this problem, every case I found (including some on this forum) related to a WordPress.org site, and the main suggestion was that this was caused by a plugin, possibly a social sharing plugin. But this site is definitely on WordPress.com and I don’t have any plugins. I do have social sharing. I did try de-activating them, and it made some difference, but not much.
So can anyone please answer these questions for me:
1. Has anyone else come across this error message on WordPress.com?
2. Do you have any advice on this problem please?
3. Is there any way I can flush the WordPress.com cache (if there is one) as this is the advice given to wordpress.org users?
Thank again for any help anyone can offer.

Hi fresatomica,
I thought it might be good to keep public on this because I found a lot of people on Google asking this question. All were on self hosted sites, but I reckon there may be others on wordpress.com with the same problem, and this might help them.
Thanks.

Hey there,
We won’t delete anything. The thread will definitely stay public and viewable, it just will automatically close to replies after two weeks of inactivity.
Thanks!

For the record (in case anyone searches for this topic), this matter has been resolved.
The approximately 100 redirect chains, each with anywhere from 2 to 11 redirects to external URLs, were mainly set up by advertising which is part of WordPress free plans. I didn’t know about tracking pixels and redirects before now, so I have learnt something.
The solution is to upgrade to a plan or service that doesn’t have ads.
Thanks to WordPress happiness engineers who explained this to me.
